SetCPU vs Overclock

I am also running Fresh 1.1 with the Gumbo kernel. I followed ghbil's post to set max at 528 and min at 245 ondemand. It is a newer post than the one suggesting 480 max.

Let's see how this goes....

UPDATE:

A couple of additional posts by gbhil that help understand the speed settings.

I read those posts by gbhil, pretty basic, but informative as to what the different settings do.

I was playing around with these settings (PowerSave, OnDemand, Performance) and accidentally left it on PERFORMANCE this morning. It dropped 5% in about 20 minutes off the charger. I put it back to on-demand and it stopped. I didn't notice any increase in speed with Perforamnce, though. When I tried PowerSave, the phone became painfully slow.

I'll have to keep experimenting with it and reading the XDA forum.

Quick update for anyone who is interested, I left my phone on 176 (or whatever frequency you can add) max, 122 min. Lost about 11% battery. The night before I lost 1%, then another 2% after playing with it for 30 seconds, but it stopped dropping after that. 122/128 is a good min, but definitely don't go less than 245 for the max.

I also noticed that emails tend to not come through until I wake up the phone for a minute, but that doesn't really bother me. If you're expecting something though, make sure you look from time to time.

Has anyone else tried this? I'd really love to see how its working for others. At least it works for me =)

Just tried detecting the native frequencies on Overclock and wow what a difference compared to using the standard 528 max setting. that thing zips thru menus like nothing else... there is actually a max setting of 998Mhz although i doubt it will really run that fast but mine set on 652.8Mhz it really zips but u gotta watch ur uptime(time with screen on cuz the battery temp will creep up kinda quick but its so worth the quickness. Like I said just dont browse the web for an hour with a setting higher than 528Mhz.

I tried this, and it definitely seems faster on the menus, but I get just as many missed papi-fires on papimissle as I did before u.u

But seriously, it isn't running at anything higher than 528. I have heard some people say that setCPU seems to run faster than OCW, so maybe it doesn't actually run at a full 528 until you tell it to run higher than that. Maybe it does work to set it that high?

technically we can't really overclock our processors cuz we don't have the closed source kernel which is wats required to actually control speed of the processor... the kernel source that we have is the open source. if htc ever releases it then we'll truly be overclocking :) but i read somewhere that setcpu and overclock increase cpu scaling which makes menus and screens load faster. How thats not related to overclocking im not sure but is def better than stock.

we have the HTC kernel... but we don't have the drivers that are closed source... as far as overclocking.. here's my thoughts on it.. running with the cpu slightly lower than full potential (528 instead of 600) will prolong the battery and the life of the CPU. Overclocking in the PC world was fun.. but in the end all that you really accomplished was generating more heat just to get the fastest possible clock speed for a screen shot. in other words... bragging rights.. yes I overclocked my Athlon XP 800 to over 1000 with air cooling... and over 1200 when water cooling... was it stable enough to run at 1200 everyday?? nope... water cooled I ran at 1000... just 200 over stock. that cpu had a much shorter life than the one in my wife's PC that was never overclocked... in fact.. that old PC is still in use (Linux router/firewall)..

all that was a long winded way of saying overclocking your phone to a higher speed will shorten both the battery life and cpu life.. on a phone you can't simply replace a burned out CPU like you can on a PC... using SetCPU and Overclock to let the CPU slow down when Idle is a good thing... trying to get the CPU to works extra hard and overclock isn't so good...

but it's your phone... OC that sucker all ya want....

i was using setcpu, but the battery life was not so good. It would be like 5-8% drain per Hr. Had to charge it every night. With normal use, I would have to charge some in middle of day too.

Tried the overclock app last night..
at 2am, my battery was at 57%
It is now 2pm and with little use.. I am at 46%!!!!!!!

WOW.. I can not believe it.
I hope this keeps up!!!:D

Yeah, I've been using Overclock for a couple of weeks and definitly notice a huge change in battery life. I've got mine set to 528/245 and 324/245 when the screen is off. I get close to two days out of a charge with moderate use.

Not meaning to hijack the thread but what does the "set on boot" setting do on setcpu? I am assuming it that setting makes it run on startup at the settings selected?

Exactly. Some people have reported having problems when set on boot is activated, I have had it on since I've installed setcpu with not one problem or FC

OK, already had Fresh 1.1 and Gumbo, so I took the plunge last night and loaded SetCPU.

This was the single biggest mistake with this phone yet! I had to reboot 6 times before noon today, bluetooth was going haywire, touch gestures were lagging beyond belief, and numerous call problems!

My first reaction was to remove SetCPU, which made things a little better, but the phone is still showing a lot of problems that did not exist before loading SetCPU. I am almost to the point of doing a nandroid backup and if that does not work an RUU.

Here is all I can say, if you are having an issue and it is an issue that almost no one else has with a particular app, then chances are the app in question is not the culprit. How did you root? What other apps do you have loaded that require root access?

I've seen people have to go back and flash a rom more then once before things work properly sometimes. I'm one of the lucky ones I guess. I only had to root and rom once.

It has something to do with it, the phone went from working almost flawlessly to buggy as hell, the only change made was SetCPU. Whether it is not compatible with something else on the phone I can't say, but if it is then it is most definitely a problem with that particular app AND SetCPU.

I rooted and rom'd with with Fresh's pre-kitchen and Fresh 1.1, loaded the updates and then did Gumbo. Everything went fine the first time around, I noticed improvements in the phone with each successive step to the point of being almost perfect after loading Gumbo.

After a couple of more reboots since removing SetCPU the phone has almost returned to the way it was before. The exception being the HTC Contacts widget, it is real jerky and unresponsive when I try to scroll through my contacts. It was working great before, which makes me think there may have been some kind of issue there.

interesting, what other apps do you have running that modify the system settings? (spare parts, autostart, task killers, etc)

What settings did you use with setcpu?

It was set to 528/160 run on boot. Apps that modify system settings, I only have Spare Parts and Wave Secure (I think it alters system settings).

Apps I have loaded are:
Achmed soundboard
Ahoy Matey Lite (coming off tonight)
Bar Code Scanner
Bubble Level
Color Flashlight
Compass
Easy Spirit Level
Ethereal Dialpad
Fat Bastard
Handcent
HandyCalc
Battery Widget (HTC)
Liquid Fire Theme
Photoshop.com Mobile
PicMe
PicSay
PureRSS
Ringdroid
Shazam
Solitaire
Spare Parts
Speed Test
Star Trek Sounds
TimeCatcher
TimeClock
WaveSecure Beta

I noticed some slight lag that seemed to go away after I removed handcent and spare parts. Might not be the case for you though. I didn't have any problems like you have described though. You could set setcpu up a little to 245/528, set on boot, and make sure it is set to on demand and you will still see some definite battery life improvements over stock. I have read about some people experience lag or hanging up on wake with it set to 160. Last resort I would try backing up all your apps and contacts, wipe the phone from the recovery boot screen, then reflash fresh and gumbo kernel then see if setcpu still has the same effect.

Thanks Rob, may give that a shot later. For now, the phone is back to where it was before, and i really didn't have any complaints on the battery life, it would make it till 6 pm or later and I have a car charger if it doesn't (most of my time is on the road, job sites or at the shop).

I am going to chalk it up to my experience with computers, when I was in the business. You could build ten identical computers and a few of them would not perform like the others no matter what you did. Whether it was a piece of hardware just far enough out of spec to cause a problem but not be diagnosed or a bit or two of data out of place I can't say, but I saw it many, many times.

I've downloaded SetCPU and noticed speed increases at first but now it doesn't seem all that better. Maybe I don't have SetCPU running correctly. Once you download it, you just set it to what you want and that's it right? Theres no button to push to make it start working? Hope that makes sense.

I can't find Overclock Widget anymore!!!

arg :-(

Did he take it off the market?

My coworker just got our phone, already rooted and I told him about the overclock widget and he couldn't find it.

Anyone have the APK of it?

Thanks,
-Nigel

hmm... still shows on androlib.com but not in our market.. he did update it on there 9hrs ago so it might be 1.6 and higher now.. lemme see if I can get the apk for you.

sorry.. I no longer have it installed on my phone.. been happy with SetCPU and deleted it..

Have you noticed your phone going slower after a week or so of flashing rom and gumbo along with SetCPU? Mine was running fast but now it seems like I get some lag back.

nope.. mine has no lag.. I do as a practice reboot my phone and all my computers (all 11 of them) once a week
