Root Setting custom DNS address for 3G

I am wanting to utilize OpenDNS servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) over Virgin Mobile's 3G network. Not necessarily for security concerns, but for performance reasons.

I know how to set custom DNS for wifi networks with static ip, and both home and work DSL modems have their settings utilizing OpenDNS servers anyway.
But I have had no success with setting DNS for 3G using various apps available in the market. I have tried SetDNS, DNSSetting.apk (from XDA forum)
The settings appear to be applied but when testing to see if it is using OpenDNS by visiting http://welcome.opendns.com it is not working.

Does anyone know of any workaround or other way to permanently set a custom DNS for the 3G network?

Thanks in advance.

So apparently it is blocked on Sprint's end. At least I know to stop trying. Thanks for the input. If someone does find a way to set custom DNS please let us know.
