setting in text messages

What are the differences in the settings: GSM alphabet, Unicode and Automatic? In messages.
I have att phone.
I have had mine set on automatic, but when I want to send or rec a message with a photo, it won't send or receive till I turn on data. When I am home I usually have data off and just use wifi.
Will one of the others settings let me send and rec photo messages?

Don't know what those settings do, but I do know that MMS won't work when the data is turned off since the messages can only sent/received via the carrier (AT&T) network. I don't think there is any way around it.

Thanks, LoafPincher. Yeah, that is the only way I have been able to send and rec photo ms. I was just hoping that there was some setting to send rec photo Ms. Like regular text Ms do without data.
