Help setting network "name" details for Captivate

When I look at what is connected using my wireless access point,
I see the MAC address for my Android but it does not show any sort of
name string.

In contrast, laptops show the host name and even iPhones(tm) show a name string.

How do I set the "name string" on a Captivate -- Android v2.1upd, non-root -- so that my access point tells me about my Android phone.

You gave your router a name when you set it up, like saintdanberts you see it when you view wireless networks on your laptop its your ssid

Those devices broadcast an NMB name. The Captivate (a Linux device) does not. Your router just happens to display such a name if it's broadcast.

Other non-Windows devices will also tend to not broadcast an NMB name. NMB is a Microsoft thing. Just a fluke that the iPhone happens to opt to broadcast a name on a Windows protocol.

... did I ask the wrong question ...

I'm not asking about the router name. The router reports a table
when I ask for status. The table says things like

   Host Name ..... MAC Address ..... IP Address .....
   Host Name ..... MAC Address ..... IP Address .....
   Host Name ..... MAC Address ..... IP Address .....
   Host Name ..... MAC Address ..... IP Address .....
...

For each of my laptops and many of my other net-aware devices the hostname column shows the assigned name "barney" "wilma" "dilbert" and so on. However, the entry for my Captivate is a string of numbers like
the UUID of a disk drive (its not one of those) or the VIN for an auto.

Under the Bluetooth config for the Captivate, I can assign a name.
How do I assign a hostname for the wifi networking side of things?
