Setting up contacts on new desire

I have just picked up my new desire and must say I love it.
All my contacts are currently on the sim and as such don't show up in my people widget.
Do I simply need to import them to the phone to get them to show up?

Also when adding a new contact should I add as a google contact or just as a phone contact?
Do I gain anything by saving as a google contact?
I don't really use gmail and only set it up for the market and maybe to collect mail from my pop account.

The big advantage of using Gmail contacts is if you lose your phone or it gets stolen you just log in with your Gmail account on your new phone and all your contacts will download. It's like a free online backup. Plus you can edit them on the web and it will sync to your phone which is quicker sometimes.
