what a nightmare trying to setup yahoo email
Ok I have figured it out. Now I am based in Canada and have a yahoo.ca email though this should work for any yahoo account
1. Startup htc desire
2. hit mail, then POP
3. Add email and password ( make sure wifi is on ) and hit next ( dont do manual )
4. Your setting up a POP email, so in the incoming set it to
Incoming mail server settings
* POP server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
* Use SSL
* Port: 995
5. Hit next to do outgoing
Outgoing mail server (SMTP) settings
* SMTP server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
* Use SSL
* Port: 465
6. add your name and finish
Be sure to type it as yahoo.com in the incoming and outgoing as shown above even though your email is whatever@yahoo.ca it still needs yahoo.com
Mine worked and pulled in... All without a PLUS account!

i also got Yahoo app as soon as it came out and for me it's great, at least it does all what i need.
