Help Severe Camera Problems

Having a somewhat similar problem. Took a few pics yesterday with no problem.

Today, camera loads fine, looks fine, zooms fine, auto-focused fine...but when I press the optical joystick...nothing happens! Optical mouse and joystick works fine in other apps, what the heck is going on?

I think it's an issue with the camera software. My camera worked fine for the first couple days, but now I'm having the same issue. My friend is having the issue as well. I think this will be widespread soon. Hopefully an OTA or something can fix this issue.

I called Verizon CSR yesterday and they told me they would replace it under the 30 day worry free guarantee. However, they won't have any to ship out until the 14th :( I'm kind of hoping the OTA will fix this and then I can just tell them the problem is solved and they don't need to send out a new one.

I also have been using the camera fine since Thursday, but today the picture freezes as soon as I take it, and nothing works until I hit the power button once and it takes me back to the home screen.

I noticed there was an "update" of some kind last night. Not sure which app updated, but it said it an update for your "phone" was available so I said "OK".

Did anyone else get this?

When I woke up there was an update to Google Maps but no phone update. Can you go to your settings, About Phone, Software Information and tell us what your phones says for:
-Build Number
-Software Number

Sorry for the delay, I had to run out.

Build number: 1.22.605.0 CL161493 release-keys

Software Number: 1.22.605.0

I think I have the fix for the freezing problem. The same thing kept happening to me last night while taking pictures at a wedding.

I found out that I was accidentally pressing the volume key while snapping a pic. Very easy to do because of where it is located, and the way I was holding the camera. Also the hard silicone case made it very easy for the volume keys to be depressed. When I first installed the case I had to stretch it out a bit so the volume rocker would not stick when depressed. Solved my problem and has worked perfect ever since !

Hope this helps !

Bottom Line: Make sure you are not depressing the volume rocker as you press the shutter button (optical trackball) to snap your photo !

My problem still persists. For me the camera also freezes up when I press to take a photo of something that is ~1 cm away. I know the camera isn't calibrated to take pictures up close but the fact that it still freezes up when this happens bothers me. When I lift my phone slightly off the table and try to take a picture, the flash comes up and stays on, my screen goes white, and it freezes up without taking a picture. I then have to press the home button and relaunch the camera, only to be welcomed by a black screen. I have to press home and launch the camera again to get it to function normally.

Does this happen to anyone else or is it just me?

Here's the video of what's happening just so you guys can verify if this same exact problem is happening to you too.

If it is I imagine you can get yours replaced by Verizon as well. I should have the replacement tomorrow or the day after and hopefully will have a working camera.

Guys, I was having the same problem, but I've since switched storage from phone storage to SD card and haven't had the camera freeze up again. Can anyone else confirm if they've tried this and had any results (good or bad)?

switching to SD card storage has seem to fixed my issue as well. I was at about 50% fail using phone storage. but 10/10 since switching to sd storage. Hopefully this is our solution, even though the phone shouldn't have had issue in the first place.

Just got my new phone from the Fedex guy today. No camera problems! I successfully opened the camera like 50 times and took shots. So for those of you with the problem, I strongly suggest you just call Verizon and get yours replaced.

I also fixed this issue by switching to SD card. It even works fine if I switch to internal storage afterwards, but when I restart the phone, the freezes come back (on internal storage). Doitle, can you confirm that your new phone is working well through the internal storage?

Also, what did you tell the rep and how quickly did you get the replacement? Can this be done through a store?

When you say "switched to SD card" how exactly do you do that? How do you tell the camera to record to internal mem vs. the SD card??

if you open the camera app, and go to the bottom settings (gear icons), you will see below the ISO,etc a setting for Storage - In there u can pick between sd card and internal.

All I told him was that the camera app would freeze most of the time, told him I'd done a factory reset and it did not help the problem. That was all it took. He said they usually save the factory reset for last and if that didn't solve it then the problem is with the phone.

Also I did try to switch to SD storage and it did not fix the camera freezing issue for me. Even if it did remedy it I'd advise you to get it replaced by Verizon. My new phone works perfectly fine sending pictures to the internal memory or the SD card.

guys, i just got the OTA update and it seems to have fixed this issue? i rebooted the phone twice and tried it and its all good for now. Doidle, can you tell us what version ur new phone is running? is it build Number 1.22.605.2/Baseband Version 1.00.03.04.06?

The new phone did not have the update. I just updated it a second ago but the prior version matched my phone which was freezing.

oh interesting. Well, I keep playing with it and not a single issue. One thing that I should point out is, right after the install, the camera told me that the internal memory was unavailable and so it switched to sdcard. I checked out the phone settings for internal memory - also unavailable. Then I rebooted and these 2 things were fixed. I double checked the files and they're being saved in the internal memory - no more freezing problems on my end.

The update definitely fixed my problem. I was in the process of using the camera for the third time this morning, all of which resulted in freezes and black screens.

Then I got the notice that an update was available and I chose to "install". The phone rebooted itself three time during the update, and when it was finished, the camera storage was reset to "internal" and it works perfectly now! I have been using it continually since the update with no problems at all!

Good work HTC! :D
