Help SG GT9100G Low Device Memory Message

Hi Folks,

I have SG GT9100G phone with following specs:

Model : GT91000G
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version:I9100GDDLK1
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7 dpi@DELL130#2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWLC2

Internal Storage:16GB
ROM/Device Memory:2GB (2015MB)

Problem:Last couple of days getting a message that "Low Device memory "

I downloaded utility "Disk usage" from Google play and here are the finding:

App Storage:

Total Space: 2015MB
System Data: 1623MB
Application:212MB
Free Space:180 MB

My phone is not rooted and I do not want to root it either.

My Questions are:

1). How should I avoid getting this message of Low Device memory? I have moved all the possible application to 16 USB Storage(which can be moved by apps2SD) and I have cleared cache/data.Slight improvement of 20MB. I have also deleted some application/Games.Earlier I hardly had 15 applications.

2). Is this 2GB a separate storage or just a partition on 16GB internal memory? Is there a way to increase the Memory of 2GB to say 4GB so as to allow more space and installation of application?

3). Any other insight to optimize 2GB memory?

4). There is Samsung update via Kies for ICS upgrade and its size is 220 MB.But I have lesser memory on device. Will i be able to install this update with low memory? Should I go for factory reset to gain some on 2GB?

Appreciate your quick response.

thanks
SAM

Instead of Disk Usage, can you go to task manager and tap on storage. Check what it shows there. Your 16GB actually consists of 11.5GB USB storage (phone memory which you can manipulate without root), and 1.97GB system storage where apps are installed which you can't access without root. Small apps are fully installed in the 2GB memory. Big apps have part of it there, and the major data in the 11.5GB space. Rest goes to the android OS.

Move2SD moves a large part of whatever app files in the 2GB to external microSD to clear the 2GB space.

App2SD moves to external microSD usually and without a microSD, the move2SD usually gives error. Moving to external microSD clears up the 2GB memory location.

2). Is this 2GB a separate storage or just a partition on 16GB internal memory? Is there a way to increase the Memory of 2GB to say 4GB so as to allow more space and installation of application?

No

3). Any other insight to optimize 2GB memory?

Move to SD to move app memory to external microSD. The problem is what the system data of 1.6GB consists of. System data should not be part of the 2GB.

4). There is Samsung update via Kies for ICS upgrade and its size is 220 MB.But I have lesser memory on device. Will i be able to install this update with low memory? Should I go for factory reset to gain some on 2GB?

Not sure, but factory reset is a good thing. Also, you sure its ICS? Asking because you are on G and read that only India got that.

Appreciate your quick response.

thanks

Hi russell,

Thanks a lot.Appreciate you taking time and sharing information which is helpful.
I have 16GB Micro SD card. APPS2SD will be moving to there. But not all the application are getting moved.

So if there is no way to increase 2GB to higher. Can Factory reset will help in clearing some space from system data 1623MB.

Curious: What is the system data of 1623MB?Is there a way I can see what in there?

Since I have hardly any applications so 2Gb utilization is quite high. Though time to time I do a install lots of application and then uninstall them.

Is it possible that remains of them are there on system data(1623MB) within 2GB?

It is a ICS update in India as per youmobile.org. As per Kies new firmware
PDA:LPQ/PHONE:LP5/CSC:LP7 (INU) this is belief is ICS4.

One more Question : What is Lazylist ?( I have folder on 16GB usb)

Appreciate you guidance..

Thanks

Factory reset would put everything back to factory situation, meaning it should clear your 2GB space easily. It won't change your firmware if you are already on ICS. But please be warned that it would clear your apps, settings and pretty much whatever user input you have. So backup whatever you can, like your contacts, notes, files, etc.

Move2SD does not move the whole app. Just move whatever it can. I believe the .exe part of the app must remain in the 2GB space. I have over 120 apps and have enough space for everything, so not sure why you have 1.6GB taken up by system data. Also, the app files in the microSD (after moving), will be located in folder Android_secure. You wouldn't be able to see anything in there except through PC windows explorer.

As for lazylist, I think its a folder created by some app or other that allows for cache files for media. Sort of like thumbnails. You can delete it. Folder will be created again if its used.

Cheers

Hey ..thanks a lot..your suggestions were really helpful. I did a factory reset and now device memory is back to ~100 MB used.. I did a backup as advised.

Thanks a ton again..

Hi Russell Ng,

One more Question on my SG2:GT9100G India

When ever i connect to internet via Wifi or 3G.My system memory usage goes up by ~4-5MB a day. This is only when i do 5-10 min surfing. As per data usage its system data.

I checked through Manage application and i was not able to find any application which take this space. At this pace I will consume my 2GB soon as I will soon start installing games and apps.

I am still on 2.3.6 and not rooted.

Thanks

I wish I could help. I've read about this and it indicates increasing error logs with wifi use. Here are the 2 threads talking about it. Apparently updating to ICS solves it.

http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/513566-system-data-growing-out-control.html

http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...ed-up-internal-storage-itself-cannot-fix.html

Maybe someone with more expertise will drop by and help in a while. Or try searching through the XDA-Developers site. I don't troll there that much since its really technical sometimes. But for the same reason, problems like yours might have a better chance at a solution there.

Hi Russell Ng,

Hope you are doing good. I want to root my GT9100G.

Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version:I9100GDDKL1
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7 dpi@DELL130#2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWLC2

1).What is the best and safest method of rooting so that yellow triangle and Increase in binary counter does not happen. Appreciate you guidance.

2).One more thing. Today I tried unlockroot.com to root, but I was not successful.Seems if I have firmware "GINGERBREAD.XWKJ2" I may be. How to get this firmware.I have downloaded it from some site but not sure how to apply it.

3).Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7 dpi@DELL130#2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWLC2

Where I can a rooted Kernal for "GINGERBREAD.XWLC2" as well as Stock Kernal(just in case if method fails)?

thanks

Sam
