Help SGS2 Battery Problem - Noob alert!

ACJMY2K

Lurker
Hi all, for the last week or so I've been having diabolical battery drain on my phone. I haven't installed anything new or done anything different to cause this.

The battery screen shows that 'Android OS' is using 70% of the power and that I lost 20% charge whilst the phone was switched off!!

Now I have downloaded a battery monitor app which says the 'kernel' is the problem, using nigh on 60% of the power.

I have read lots of posts about rooting and new kernels but I am a bit reticent to root my phone.

Can someone explain to me (in layman terms) what a kernel is and whether I can get a better one without rooting? If not, can someone point me in the direction of a guide to rooting?

Thanks all (be nice)

Hey there ACJMY2K, first off welcome to the site.

Secondly, could you please perform a battery reboot, by removing the battery and restarting the phone.

Also, if you really don't want to root your device you could backup your information and Factory Reset the device, Google saves Contacts/Emails/Apps/Games so there shouldn't be that much of a worry about those.

This article might help you further understand the question: What is a Kernal?

Lastly, we have root guides for your device here (If you are using the international device): Galaxy S2 (International) - All Things Root - Android Forums

Hope this helps! :)

Your Os will use most of the power consumption.....you may find that if you check some of your apps ....they may be running as well
Some of these you can turn off to save power (classed as part of the Os)

Eg ....I turn off......data...gps .....location...youtube app.....flash player.......google play when I am not using them......this will save power.

Correct me if i'm wrong......the kernel is the foundation on which each Os is built.....I don't know of any non root kernels that would be better for you (maybe someone here may be able to help)

Hope this helps :)

Cheers Fred, I always turn Wifi off when I go out, but never had a problem with it before last week which is what I don't understand.... (I would regularly get home from work with 60+% charge left, now I'm lucky if it makes it to lunchtime before dying!

Thanks DC, I removed it for a couple hours this morning (the battery was slightly warm) and it seemed better when I initially turned it back on but then about an hour later it dropped 30% in one go?!

I've already done a hard reset and that didn't seem to fix it, I will research rooting a bit more tonight. Can anyone give me tips etc on what to install?
