UPDATE on resolution of my cracked screen: I called Support. With polite persistence
("I'm sorry, that's not acceptable. The screen cracked without my doing anything. I've seen hundreds of similar reports on Samsung forums on the web. Please repair it at no charge. if need be, would you mind escalating this to someone that can approve this?"),
Samsung agreed to replace it, no charge. The phone call was perhaps 10 minutes. I mailed it and it was returned in less than two weeks.
