Help SGS3 screen cracked itself!

Mattes21

Lurker
Hey all...
Apologies in advance if this has been posted before or discussed elsewhere on the forum! I'm a newbie and I did try and find out first.

So... I have a Samsung galaxy s3 (white) its not even a month old! I have a belkin leather pouch for it and I'm always

I would definitely try and write a complaint to them, i have never experienced this myself, since i do not own the phone, and i dont know how much it would cost to get a replacement with your warranty, but i would write a complaint in and see what can be done.

Sorry about your luck :(

Hey Mattes21. Sorry to hear about your situation. It's disheartening how awful customer service has become. I don't know if you live in or near a big city but often times there are phone repair shops that will do glass swaps for pretty cheap. A lot cheaper than your deductible on the insurance. Maybe you could look into that in your area? That's about the only advice I can offer up on this situation. Cheers!

So sad to hear about your situation. I would definitely try writing a complaint letter and find a phone repair shop for the glass swap as suggested by Brian 706. Hope it gets taken care of real soon! Best of wishes.

a month ago I would have said if the screen broke, you broke it, but i think this is like the 2nd or 3rd thread someone has posted about a screen cracking with no known drops. I wonder if the temp change from being cooler and putting it on top of a tv could do it? this is definitely strange...

I love the S3 but this screen cracking on its own is a very real problem. I spend half an hour on my phone looking at pictures, facebook and news while my girlfriend watched a tv program and there was definitely no crack.
When celebrity juice started I put the S3 on the arm of the chair next to me, the adverts came on and I had a hair stuck to my screen, wait it

Best pic of mine I could get with my work blackberry.

I went out to move my car since I had parked it in 90 minute parking.

Texted my wife and put the phone in my right front pocket.

Moved the car, got out of the car and went to check her reply.

Looked at the screen with a WTF face.

I had the screen Crack on my atrix 4G. I was reading a article while staring at the screen it made a pop sound and exploded into a thousand pieces. Best answer I could find was sudden temp change

I have exactly the same crack, I'll post a picture up when I get it back from Carphone Warehouse, who have just refused to repair it under warranty. It cracked with a loud popping sound literally in my hands, while I was watching a video on it.

I'm going to try my luck in small claims court, obviously it's a tough one to prove but I think if I can gather a few other cases of the same thing happening there's at least a small chance. Would you be willing to send me a letter detailing your case?

Interesting. I have the same problem. Last night I was at the airport waiting for my brother. Picked up my phone, looked up the flight info, put back in the pocket and about ten minutes later I pulled it out to the check the time and to my surprise I had a two inch crack on the top right corner of my phone between the camera and sensors down to the right below the power button. I doubt it has anything to do with temperature changes. WTF??? I was so happy with this phone until now :(

damn

For anyone trying to get evidence to support a claim like this with Samsung.
My S3 too has cracked along the top half for seemingly no reason at all.
The crack runs from the top of the volume rocker along to the other side of the phone.
Never been dropped and always handled like a baby.

I have called Samsung and they have agreed to look at the phone and assess it for manufacturing fault, in which case they will repair free of charge. However I am suspecting they will say they can't find any evidence of such, I assume they will look for excess heat to have caused a crack?

Though I have not had this problem, I have had simular situations where something happened that just couldn't be explained (called "act of God").
I had very good results writing a letter (physical letter, not email) to a company's VP of Consumer Affaris or the VP of Marketing. Normally, I get a positive outcome. But if not, all it cost me was a few minutes and a stamp.

Feel for y'all. Good Luck.

I picked up the phone, out of its padded holder, in my tote, on the table, where I had put it an hour before. Screen cracked! It was a delightful three weeks that I had the phone (except that you have to downld an APP to get voicemail alerts!). (sigh).

Crack runs from upper-right, near power button, down to bottom edge, to the right of the go-home button.

I felt guilty about some imagined dropping until I saw all these. I took 2 pix of the screen, but am not yet allowed to post pix.

What's the consensus? --Call Samsung locator for a repair place near me (MA, USA), or send it to a place like irpairfast (irrepairquick?). I saw the YT clips, but I am not eager to try it myself.

Can we use mass action to get the repair at no charge? (There are plenty of reports of this in similar-Samsung-phone subforums here and other hosts.)

If Samsung is not likely to fix them, can anyone recommend a good indie repair place? thanks. (very nice, complete, well-run forum!)

3 week old phone, I would take it to your service provider and let them handle/swap it. If they give a problem point them to this Forum and Thread for them to read the problem themselves. Also don't let them try to use insurance as that will cost you a deductible.

Your phone screen would have been indestructible if you had gotten this...

invisibleSHIELD EXTREME screen protector - YouTube

Which is also available for Samsung Galaxy S3 and what I put on my phone.

It also has an additional use. In my spare time, I put on costume to fight crime and protect the innocent. My phone with the indestructible screen protector is part of my super-suit. I put the phone, screen-side-outward, in front of my chest, so it can deflect bullets for me. It also serves as my insignia. Superman has a S symbol. Batman has a yellow bat. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 with a super screen protector.

True story.

Well, I did have a protector on it...forgot the brand, I believe we ordered it from Verizon Mobile. Black, rubber, back and edges.

But this problem arose without my even touching the phone, so, although your advertisement was perhaps free, I don't think that even a modestly alert reader would consider it persuasive.

Right, I already called my local Verizon Wireless store (MA, USA). They said that even had I purchased insurance, the cost would be only moderately higher than the deductible (I think he said $100), and that without insurance (we did not buy insurance), it would be "too expensive," and I should just buy a refurb on eBay or whatever.

I discounted this info, b/c
- I would imagine that he's got a script to follow, to discourage people from pursuing repair w/VW
- we did not buy the phones there; we bought from VW online
- I called another store about 1/2 mile from his, which provided different info

But I am pursuing writing to the Samsung US VP Consumer Affairs.

Caspa7, would you care to provide us an update on your claim?
