Root Sholes In Trouble?

Ummm, to take donations, they have to have it go through the Android Market, right?

Just try not reporting that....

Couldn't they just put it on marketplace for free then on their website have a paypal account setup for donations? Or is that against the developer's agreement with google?

i dont see why they would have to go through the market liek i said set it up in the market as a free app then on the sholes.info site setup a donation button like many torrent sites have

Regardless, google takes their share off the top and the leftovers are for the companies to feed off. Regardless if you cancel and refund, you wont get it all back.

It could slip by....who knows

At least they can justify the cost of the app as a donation, since it's also available for free.

thats what im saying..but you bring up a good point i dont know if thats against the agreement

That's my biggest problem with it. Sholes team actually takes a bigger hit by refunding the full purchase price without being compensated by google for the loss.

but if theres nothing against them doing that in the agreement and having a donation on there site and free app in market then how is google taking anything?

i didnt mention anything abt refunding anyone

if you uninstall...chances are the app will be pulled, and you never get it back.

if you uninstall and refund...google gets their money, sholes and developers get zero.

Regardless they will continue to push out updates.

Update: Sholes has been taken off the market. If you still have the app you can still use to go back down to 2.1 or whatever. I'm personally keeping my 2.0.5. Wont be going anywhere.

alright sorry abt that..but still dont kno see why they cant do what i said anyone know if thats violating googles terms accepting donations on there through paypal?

From what I read here and elsewhere the problem has been resolves ans Sholes will be back up and running soon. No need to panic..

Thats what I was getting at. Regardless if they go through the market...which is run through google. Google takes money off top. So when refunded...you don't get your full refund. Thus lose/lose unless you keep the app

Just to clarify: I've pulled SMUpdater from the market because of the current situation. If you see any ROMs appear on SMUpdater, I wouldn't trust them for the time being. Just wait util you get the green light - there will almost certainly be an update to the market app when it returns.

Its official.

For those talking about Sholes giving the app out for free and accepting donations through a paypal link, that's how it's been since the beginning.

The SMUpdater app has always been available from their website for free, and there's a big ol' paypal donate button there too.

Where else did you read that? I really think they have a big problem on their hands.. I don't know when they'll be back. let alone soon.

Nothing about any of this is illegal... we can do whatever we want to our own property, and android is open source.

true... I was just scared :(

Didnt really think anything out.

its not easy to watch the Olympics, have my phone go into a boot-animation loop, and lose sholes at the same time. it takes a toll on your body.

Since when is working with open source software illegal?

Actually no, all the Google apps are closed source, not open. Same with anything Motorola has made. Only the OS is open source, but nothing else in it is. Why do you all think Google sent Cyanogen a Cease & Desist order for his ROM's? That is why he had to remove all of the closed source Google apps from them. Yes we can do whatever we want with this because it is our own property, but all the Sholes guys could get in serious trouble for profiting off of Google's closed source apps which their ROM's contain.

Wow ... website and SMUpdater gone.

Kinda like going to your favorite video store and seeing a sign on the door that says "we're moving"... only they never move...... and the business disappears.

Guess i'm glad I waited to pull the pin on this one.

SMUpdate becomes DMUpdater.

Very cool... no info on when it'll show up on the market. Hopefully they got their LLC registered so they can take donations without the tax hit.... on private income that is.

Well, one good thing about all this is the house cleaning it will do, and I'm not referring to the team members. I referring to the users.
Some of the posts made here by users complaining that they wasted their money, that the team somehow did them an injustice, or insinuating that the team is comprised of greedy members simply because they've never filed taxes before or had to worry about what happens when you deposit funds in your account exceeding $5000.00 ($3500.00 in some states) demonstrates them to be a bit ignorant, if not complete morons.
I'm sticking with the development of the Sholes/DroidMod team, now more than ever, not only because I believe in their ability get back in the saddle again, but because this upset has shaken out more of the immature little kiddies that waste the teams development time by requesting immature little kiddie things.

Makes my blood boil when I read a buncha pissy little brats crying "Whaa. I want my five bucks back!" over something like this. My first inclination is to say, "Getta job.", but that would be based on the assumption that Mommy & Daddy paid for your Droid, or you're just a real tightwad. In either case I don't much like you.

I was interested in rooting and did so with the SM updater and then overclocked with setcpu. I was running 2.0.3 and everything was fine, I upgraded to 2.0.5 and now Im getting force closes. I want to go back to 2.0.3 but when I try to open the app on my Droid I get an error. If I dont kill the app I go into a loop of hard resets. I have no idea how to go back to 2.0.3 or to another ROM. Can anyone help? thanks
