Root Sholes SM Updater

When you flash the rom, uncheck the option to install the launcher. It is very unstable. The default launcher on sholes 2.03 includes 5 screens and it is very smooth (no FC's)

Ok, I didn't uncheck it but I do have the five screens and that is the one that keeps FC

Try uninstalling and reinstalling any widgets you are using. I sometimes run into problems with Beautiful Widgets on my homescreen and removing and reinstalling has helped. My 5 screens are now running with only a rare force close.

Thanks, I have noticed that sometimes my beautiful widgets are having problems loading, I will give that a try...

Yes, but when you flashed the rom you chose to install the 2.1 Launcher from Nexus 1 with the 3D app drawer. While it is visually appealing, it is kind of laggy, buggy, and unstable. If you had chosen not to install it, you would have gotten the default Sholes 2.03 launcher which is nice but doesn't include the 3D app drawer (both include 5 homescreens). I suppose you could always use a homeswitcher to go between 2.1, Home++ (if you have it), and 2.03 but that seems like a lot of stress on your phone. I think it would be better to just re-flash the ROM and choose not to install the 2.1 launcher.

Thanks :) back to flashing I go...

Is there a step-by step guide on how to use this program...some of the prompts are a little scary for first timers. Warnings about "breaking" my recovery mode make me squeamish.

Is this a one-stop-shop for flashing? With all of the complicated instructions out there and terms I have never heard before, I keep thinking I need to do something else first. Can I really just say "yes" to all of the prompts in this program, and have it work great?

OK, I went back and flashed 2.03 again, but did it without 2.1 launcher. 5 homescreens and no lag, thanks for the tip!:D

There is a guide; it's in this thread. Just search for it.

Just another word of advise if you do decide to use the launcher (and any home replacement). Do not have your widgets installed on both your regular home screen and the replacement at the same time (it is probably a good idea to strip all icons and widgets from the one you are not using). Multiple instances of widgets creates all sorts of problems. As much as I like the functionality and look of the available home replacements, I have yet to find any that has been without problems. For me, having 5 screens using the regular home in Sholes is the best of both worlds (although I do miss my PandaHome sidebars).

If you use the sholesmod it will root for you and is very very easy to use. It will also un-root for you as well.

Ok, just wanted to say that I'm running Sholes now with SetCPU overclocking to 800 and I'm loving it. Hopefully there won't be any major glitches, haven't been using it that long.

updated the sholes rom and finally put setcpu on. that droid is fast at 800. can`t believe that i didn`t do this sooner. trying to get my brother to take the plunge and root also

Ok, thanks everyone, I tried all of the advice given and finally the one that worked best for me was to uncheck the 2.1 Launcher and use the normal five screens, no FC and I'm Zipping all over the place. Thanks again.

The launcher worked great for me at 800, not at stock 550. I just downloaded today, so this is a very short term observation!

+1

I agree. If you MUST use a home replacement, make sure to remove EVERYTHING from any of your alternative home screens. This should greatly increase your stability but you will still not be immune from FC's unless you have a super-Droid like Joe's. But like I said, rooting and flashing a custom ROM with 5 home screens (while choosing NOT to install the 2.1 Launcher) is the way to go.

Glad you guys and/or gals were able to get everything worked out, by the way.

One of my friends just got a Droid and ran the updater, he said he got all the way through and went to reboot and it locked his phone, said it wont even power back on. Any ideas?

Sorry if this has been asked before but does sholesmod allow for live wallpaper? If so is it in the default installation, if not can you get it?

I would try a battery pull to see if that allows him to power it up

Happened to me doing something else. Try holding down the power button for awhile, waiting, plugging in USB, removing battery. Not in that order. Not sure what I did but I think the holding down power button for awhile and waiting were the solution for me.

The Milestone browser turns of anti aliasing when you scroll, to free up resources and make scrolling smoother.

Then once you've settled on a location, it turns it back on.

I don't really mind it, and if it makes the phone more efficient, I'm all for it.

Thanks for the explanation there. One of the things I didn't understand about the new browser (using Beast 7.4).
