Help Shortuct to People Icons - Post Froyo and full wipe

Ever since I had Android 1.5 using HTC Sense on my Hero, I have had an entire page of contacts using "Shortcut to Person". This displayed a nice small icon with a person's contact photo on the Sense page.

I upgraded to Froyo and still everything was fine. Today, I full wiped my phone and started to re-add the shorcuts to people and now each icon has a tiny phone icon in the lower right corner blocking the view of the full contact photo.

My question...Can this be turned off? I hate it! I don't want to use HTC's widget.

Having this problem on my Droid Incredible as well. Annoying. Would love a hint about how to work around this.

I have found no way other than syncing with facebook...which displays their facebook pic...or by using one of several apps from the market that give you more customization over the icons like folder organizer ..polordroid....desktop organizer I think was one etc.
