I don't know about everyone else but the erratic performance of the battery to me maybe points to manufacturing defect. Today i charged overnight with the phone one, turned on while still plugged in, unhooked and used for about 35 mins of web browsing over wifi, one sms, one voice-mail. Went down to 89%. Put it back on the charger and took it off anywhere from one to ten mins after it had turned green, was doing some other stuff and when i went to make a call noticed it has still on 100% after an hour. It was idle the whole time so i decided to do some web browsing for the same amount of time as before over wifi, also did some sms and made a few calls. Over 3 hours later it reached 89%. It makes no sense. Yesterday I only got about 4 hours of use before i got the warning, and for about 20-30mins of that it was on the car charger, and i charged to 100% and pulled off right when it turned green that time. There must be something wrong with the batteries they sent out that makes them so inconsistent.

I think that 99% of the time it's user error.

How is it user error, if you charge the battery it should just charge, we should not have to deal with all these tricks. Plus I charged them the same way, with two completely different results.

It's too bad - Sprint / HTC really loaded these things up too much.
I have a custom rom on mine without all the junk (FB sync, all those sense things, sprint junk, qik) and my battery life is now GREAT.
If you don't wanna do all that, ebay has 2 batteries + dock charger + car charger for $10 bucks. Can't complain about that

There is a known network issue that causes significant battery drain. It is/should be soon corrected by a software update. There is nothing wrong with your battery.

Did that a while ago when it was first posted, did not do much for me.

It resets back if your restart the phone. Unless you have an app that is constantly running and draining power, the network fix will correct your issue.
Also a fairly heavy user who sees great battery life (especially after the last update). I've really had no problems with battery life since getting the phone. I regularly see ~40% left after a full work day, thats with bluetooth, GPS, WiFi, and cell radio active (note I do not live in a 4G area, so cant say what the 4G radio would use), also play games, checking weather, take calls, surf web, etc.
I'm happy with my battery life.... No recall necessary for me!

Still does not explain the difference from this morning. All the same apps are running, did not turn off in between. And did not do the gsm fix. I thought that only helped people with a high time without signal anyway. If I ever do see that listed it is zero %, most of the time it is not listed, I am I good signal area for sprint.
i always hit hte power button to shut down the screen when not in use. it seems to help.
i would also say, it's not a defective battery issue, rather, a power hogging phone issue. this phone is a mini computer. it's like they put a watch battery in a normal phone. i'm betting future phones get massive batteries. i'm doing ok tho, i can make it from home to work to home without running out of juice....unless i stream radio during work. i can do this for about 2-3 hours before i need to worry about the battery.

all batteries work like that, there is just a worse software configuration for charging the battery. Basically once it reach 100%, it stops charging to protect from damaging/overcharging the battery. Usually batteries wait for it to drop to 90% before it charges to 100% again, so when you unplugged it, it could be anywhere from 90-100% but claiming at 100%. You can use systempanel lite to see your actual battery voltage, and mine claims 100% anywhere between 4100 to 4250 millivolts. I think if you can unplug near 4200 millivolts, that's ideal.
Yeah I had a diamond, I know these things use a lot of energy. It's more the inconsistent nature of this battery, with diamond I knew how long it would last before I had to start looking for a plug, with the Evo I have no idea. It can use 1% in an hour while on standby or 10%. Same settings, have most auto syncs off.
Would sprint just send me a new battery? I have a good phone. Just a bit of light leakage that has actually diminished over the last few days and I like the novatac screen I have, don't want to get stuck with a lemon just to get a new battery.
Ok then has anyone tried a non-stock battery? Do they behave the same way?

The phone charges the battery up to 100%, then it stops charging completely. There is no trickle charging. So let's say you plug in to charge at 10pm before bed, the phone charges to 100% in 4-5 hours (hypo). By 2-3am, the battery has reached 100%, the charging mechanism switches off and the phone begins running on battery power. It will not initiate a charge again until disconnected and reconnected.
When you wake up, unplug and get going, the software unfortunately takes a bit of time to calibrate. It's default is 100% because the battery did in fact reach 100%, however you've lost anywhere from 2-15% overnight after it completed charging.
Charge it while off at night, or turn all radios and processes off so your stand by draw at night will be maybe 1% per hour. Then you're starting as close to full as possible.
Or, what I do is unplug first thing when I wake up, plug back in then shower and dress. Off with a fresh 100% when I leave.

I have actually had 3 or 4 batteries replaced with Sprint. This was in the past with a variety of devices.
Use to be you could walk into a corporate store and talk to a tech, "my battery sucks, I think its faulty" ..."no problem, here's a replacement; sometimes batteries are duds"
But with the Evo, I think the reps though usually helpful, would lean more toward the hype around reportedly poor battery life as a whole for the Evo, thus invalidating your claim of a faulty battery. Give it a go, are you premier?

I did charge while off. Trust me, I have read and tried all the tips and tricks, even the way u do it, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

Like every other electronic device in this world, the more you use the device the more battery will go... not trying to be a jerk, but it kinda makes sense.
OP, I was almost going to post the same thing today. I charged the phone, while OFF. Sometime during the night I was up and unplugged it because it had turned green. Phone was still OFF. Turned it on in the morning and it lost 10 percent in about 5 minutes or less. I plugged back in while ON and charged it until green. I am now at 87 percent 5 1/2 hours later! I don't get this behavior either. I understand the battery charging then draining while on the charger, but if it is off to begin with, how does that happen? I am all right with doing the plug back in thing and it works well, it is just strange.

Just to give some perspective, I came from a palm pre. Before that the razr2 dumb phone and before that the samsung A900 dumb phone. Compared to those, this phone has awesome battery life. So if you have a truly stock phone that isn't tweaked to all hell and the battery is draining 10-20% per hour, then either replace the battery or the phone because it's defective.
Yeah, that is what i am talking about, i am now at 70% with 6 hours of moderate use. To some of the other posters, I know using the phone will use up battery, i am not a dumb-ass, Thats not the point i am making, I just want it to be consistent so i can plan for it, thats all. And if it is a problem with the battery they should replace it, but it sounds like it might be a software issue. I am going to try and get a new battery and see if anything changes.
