Should I get an Evo now or wait?

I was trying to decide whether or not to wait it out til issues got fixed as I'm still under alltel contract, but caved and got one anyway.I've had it for 1 week with no issues. Battery life is a lil on the bad side, but i can easily make it thru 16hrs before I hit 30% w/ light to moderate use. I have no screen or separation problems (i inspect daily), or any other ill affects others have reported. The problems ppl reported almost made me wait but now I'm glad I got one already.

PLEASE KNOW: I'M NOT SAYING ANYTHING WAS WRONG WITH IT BEFORE!

Ok now that that disclaimer is out of the way, is it safe to say that all the hardware and software issues have been ironed out for the most part. I will root, but i am just asking, is the EVO good to go for someone who waited a while?

There will always be software issues of one kind or another...that's just part of software!

Hardware - Well, I haven't read any "OMG they fixed it" threads, but I'm not seeing as many thread about hardware issues.

I've got a release day Hardware version 0002 and zero issues with it. Some phones will break and some will be just fine. Just the way things go!

To anyone who is still deciding I will vote the Evo over the Epic. I had the Samsung Moment and that phone had so many issues with the stock softwares, I will never buy another samsung phone again. Whats so funny is I had a samsung phone years ago that had issue before and I told myself that I would never buy one again but I had forgot that it was a Samsung phone until I started having problems with my moment. They drop product support to quickly for me to ever buy another one of there phones again.

Now my Evo, everything seemed to work fine right out of the box and the battery life for me was so much better than the moment. I love this phone. My wife is going to be getting the Epic because she wants a hardware keyboard so I will be playing with that so to get a real feel for how it is. However who knows if Samsung will keep supporting it for the life of the product.
But to each his own, they are probably both good and the only way you will ever know is to use both.

I picked up an Evo this weekend. So far its been everything I hoped it would be. HW version 03 and no issues, I went over it with a fine tooth comb and it passed inspection. I waited and I am glad I did. The epic has an absolutely beautiful screen but for me that's where the goodness stops. No reason to wait any longer the really good stuff won't be out till this time next year anyway.

Huh, I just looked and I also have "0003" in my Hardware Version. Is there a difference between other EVO's or some such?

Initially there was a 0002 hardware that had a Novatek screen. Then came 0003 that had Epson screen. From what I understand HTC started going with epson. Some older 0002 version had light leakage and also screen separation but it's not all of them. There were also some 0003 with Novatek screens still. Now there is only 0003 hardware with Epson screens and no screen separation issues. Light leakage I'm not sure but I have an 0003 version that I received late June and I have non of the 2 issues i've mentioned. It's been running great. I'm sure yours is too.

I've had a lot of phones over the years and the Evo has been the only one that I cant seem to put down.
And with that I had several samsungs. They seem durable enough but lack a lot of customization. It got dull fast.

You probably had past Samsung phones that didn't have Android. It is really the OS on it that allows the customization rather than the phone itself.

Things like launcher, wallpaper, widgets, etc. can all be change but that is because of Android (Google), not HTC or Samsung.

So I'm pretty much due for an upgrade this friday and cannot wait to snag my Evo, no doubt in my mind that I will be getting version 003 but I just wanted to know has anyone even seen a version 004 out yet?

When you guys say light leakeage where do you mean? where the glass meets the bezel, or when you look at the screen from an angle and see some light?

on mine the bottom of the screen is brighter than the rest near the soft buttons. If you have your display full bright you may not even notice it.

Amazon's current price is $99.99 (with new service plan+activation fee credit for up to $36 through 11:59 p.m. PDT October 18, 2010) & Sprint's ETF is listed at $200 through month 4 minus $10/mo prorate thereafter so I'm finally considering pulling the trigger on it but would appreciate some community feedback here.

The ETF is important since I want to know the exit strategy & potential total cost of ownership & have Wi-Fi available 90% of time so not sure that 10% MIA is worth $80+/month for 24 months (let's call that ~$2,000).

Frankly I would dump the EVO in a heartbeat when a handheld comes out with similar specs + projector (battery challenge yup:) yet I wouldn't be surprised to see a follow-up to the Samsung Beam soon).

Questions:

1) Order Question-Will Amazon let me enter Sprint Service Discount Codes & anyone care to share something better than 10% that is easy to use or must one call Sprint after order?
2) Is Wi-Fi reception still an issue for EVO?
3) Still SD card issues?
4) Video+Audio recording quality still questionable (compression codec issue-as photos seem quite nice)?

Is the following what I should expect or can it be improved:

HTC EVO Video test - Part I

HTC EVO Video test - Part II (Golden State Bridge)

HTC EVO 4G Camera Test - Part III (Front-facing camera)

iphone 4 vs. HTC EVO vs. Flip UltraHD video test

Smartphones HD Camcorder Video Samples (long)

Many Thanks:cool:,

EVO is worth to buy

As far as your #2 and #3 questions, I've never had any of those issues. My wifi reception is fine and I havent experienced any SD card problems.

Question 1. I have no idea, sorry.

Question 2. I never had any issues with wi-fi reception. I actually haven't heard anyone have any issues with their wi-fi connection.

Question 3. No issues with the SD card as well. I remember a few users having issues with their SD cards not reading correctly but a simple format fixed the problem.

Question 4. The video recording are fine for me. Audio is where it has problems. I mean it's not that bad but you can tell that the quality lacks when reviewing the recording.

The EVO is a great phone. I love it so much, i'm on my 4th EVO.

Good to hear, a few references:

SD card issues

Camcorder quality

Appreciate the feedback,

Are the Sprint Taxes & Surcharges laughable? No complaints about Sprint? Thoughts on WiMax->2 vs LTE?

I'm surprised there isn't more on the following (wonder if I could happily wait without more news):

Gorgeous, mysterious, EVO-ish HTC device headed for Verizon

HTC Desire HD heading to Verizon Wireless?

Verizon scoop extravaganza: Motorola Venus with portrait QWERTY, Stingray LTE tablet, and more? -- Engadget

Desire HD looks nice (hope they don't omit the kickstand for USA):

Next gen EVOs coming soon-before new year-roadmaps-carriers-must know:cool:?

Ok so my upgrade is just around the corner and i was wondering if i should just go with a evo or wait longer for a newer android device, because i dont want to buy an evo and then a few weeks later something brand new comes out thats better than the evo.
Thanks in advance
