Should I get the Hero?

Been reading the problems with text messages not getting through. This would really be a problem for me.... SHould i not get this phone now and wait for a fix or is it a small amount of users who are getting the issue? (Was going to order it today)

I have only missed a couple of texts that I know of. I would get the phone still. Looking forward to an update though.

I've never missed a text as far as I'm aware, but I'm with T-Mobile. to answer your question- yes, you should get the Hero, but I'm biased. I love this frikkin' phone.

I also agree very much with the Hero.

Here are my reasons why I loved this phone and how it has helped me.

So far it has saved me from being lost in new areas I do not know, twice (Google maps).
Been able to check out the weather where ever you are.
To have updates on chat and text from online user networks eg Facebook.
Can keep contact away from home using an MSM compatible program.
Look and read web pages while at work in my breaks eg like this forum.
Listen to some of my music from the phone or just pop on a streaming one from the net.
Also able to play a number of games online and offline. Means I no longer get bored waiting for people to turn up.
To be able to finally add my own pictures on the main screen and sounds to different contacts.
To have much more control over icons and widgets and how I want to place them on the phone.

The camera is also handy and works better than my Samsung G600

And not to forget the great software you can get from the market place.

An Android phone and not the windows mobile one.
Also something that can compete with an Iphone, as I wanted something different but just as good.

So you can see I use the phone for what it can do. I am totaly blown away by it.

Oh and one thing is the light indicaters that show if you have a message or missed call so you so not keep having to pick it up every 5 mins, as I see a lot of mobile users do.

i ordered mine and its coming soon, coz its not yet officially launched in my country... but i have played on the magic... i m quite sure it beats alot of other phones in the market... i m currently using nokia n97 and its the biggest mistake i have ever made as far as buying mobile phone is concern... i tried iphone and winmo, they dont live up to standard!

We've heard reports from unlocked and locked phones both in UK and abroad.

You should still get the phone though - if you do suffer any problems, I'm sure they will be isolated (I've never had any issues with my Orange Gero) - and fixed with an update.

definately, get the phone.. its a great bit of kit..

Yes the text messages are a problem.. from what we can see its a problem with the handset as it is happening to people on all networks.. the firmware update should fix this.. this isnt available as yet BUT if you root your handset and install the custom MoDaCo rom then this includes most of the upcoming firmware which fixes the problem.. I can confirm this as Ive tested mine after doing this and I havnt missed a single text!!! whereas before I did miss quite alot

from what I can gather teh firmware leak was from someone grabbing it off a ftp server.. but to be honest it wouldnt surprise me if HTC leaked it purposefully to the android community just to keep us happy until they get time to officially release it.. Ive seen a video of it downloading using OTA

(Is HTC preparing to deploy the new Hero software (version 2) OTA? - Android @ MoDaCo)

on a HTC hero so they really cant be far away from general release now.

No doubt when its released within a few days another custom rom even better than the current one will also be released to the android community

you just dont get this with other phones, its great =)

Most likely you won't get many neutral answers at this forum. I have a Hero and I like it very much, but if you want to set the Hero up against other phones - like the iPhone - you should google the differences. Before I bought my Hero i watched a lot of youtube videos, like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5F0Ruzwos8 (there are 3 parts in the review, you should watch them all)

I wish you good luck in your search for a new phone, you're probably going to be happy anyway 'cause there's a lot of good phones out there now although the Hero and iPhone are definitely the best :)

This is all great info... thank you all.. feeling more confident that the update will fix the text issue.. HOwever not so happy with updating it myself!! My next dilemma is do i go for Iphone of Hero!!!

Another Orange user here who's never missed texts,

Highly recommend this phone, does everything I could have needed and more, and in comparison to the iPhone, it wins on every level other than the size of Apples App Store, but the Android Market is growing all the time, and is healthily the second largest mobile app store.
