Help Should I keep my Note 3 or return it and wait for the Developer's version?

GeneL

Lurker
Today is the last day that I can return my Verizon Note 3 to Best Buy. I love my new phone…
…BUT, I understand that Samsung is bring out a "Developer's" model in the near(?) future.
I paid full price for a no-contract (unlimited date plan), so the cost for the Developer's version will be the same and not an issue.
My question is whether it's worth returning my current Note 3 and waiting for the release of the new model or to just keep my present phone?
I have to do this in the next few hours in order to stay within the allowed return period.
I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.
Thanks!

GeneL

If you're on VERIZON & prefer more of a stock ANDROID experience vs SAMSUNG's TOUCH WIZ/S-PEN U/I,then I'd say yes go for the Developer's Edition:

Samsung Galaxy Note

Not seeing it in the usual spots,GOOGLE PLAY STORE/SAMSUNG/VERIZON..........

I'm guessing before year's end, before this phone is overshadowed by the next best thing................

The Verizon Developers version is not available yet, but it is mentioned on their website without a price or date of availability.
As far as why to get the Developers version, I've seen numerous complaints about the carrier add-ons that hamper a phone's performance. I'm not technically knowledgeable enough to know just what would be gained with the flexibility of the Developers version, so that is why I'm asking for advice on this.
I love using the phone as is, but if there would be a big gain in the future I'd rather return my current Note 3 now and then purchase the new version down the line.
I think that one benefit would be that new updates for the OS would come directly from Samsung, so I would get them sooner. Other than that, what other benefit would I get with an unlocked Android OS?

I mistakenly stated the developers edition would be a stock ANDROID experience,I was thinking GOOGLE EXPERIENCE, which is basically a NEXUS (stock ANDROID) Experience (U/I).

A developers edition is typically an unlocked/rootable/customizable version of what you have now.

I still say go for it if this interests you.Otherwise, the developers edition will most likely be similar to what you have now,w/all the SAMSUNG bells & whistles.

Yes, but is it worth waiting to have a developers edition which is typically an unlocked/rootable/customizable version of what I have now?
I like my present Note 3 a lot, but I want to find out if the wait will be worth it.
For instance, are faster OS updates direct from Samsung really important to using the Note 3? And how important is it to rid the phone of the Verizon add-ons that I rarely, if ever use?
If the extra customization is worth the wait, I'd like to know why you think it is.
TIA

This is purely subjective, but,I believe a fair/honest/unbiased statement.

If you're content w/what you have, keep it.Smartphones have come a long way in the last couple of years & can handle the extra "bloat" that you do not use,w/o being a drag on the phones performance.

Who knows when (or if,for that matter, nothing's carved in stone) a developers edition will roll out.Only you can determine if a return/wait is right for you.

The next best thing (or better) would be to look here:

(Verizon) Galaxy Note 3 - All Things Root - Android Forums

Or here:

Verizon Galaxy Note 3 General - xda-developers

If you're wishing to de-bloat/customize.

Thanks for your thoughts KOLIO.

I had some exposure to "hacking" the Android OS when I had my HP Touchpad set up with the Android OS. In my "exploration" of the dedicated Android forums, I saw that there were enough mentions of "bricking" the posters' devices to make me wary of "playing around" without knowing what I'm doing.

Wouldn't a Developers Note 3 avoid the risks as opposed to hacking a "regular" model?

Otherwise, I'm tempted to just stick with the Note 3 that I already own. This is a tough choice, since it will be a big letdown to revert to my DroidX while I'm waiting. :(

Here are my thoughts after reading this thread, bottom line is I'd highly suggest you keep what you have. It's a great model, you got a good one (there's always a chance of getting a buggy phone) and personally I don't see enough of a benefit to spend the time to change it.

Instead challenge yourself to learn all of the many features to maximize your enjoyment of your present phone

Cheers :)

I called Best Buy to say that I was too ill to make it in on the 2nd. A manager said it was okay to return next day.
When I went to the store they wouldn't honor his okay. Boooo! Best Buy. :-(
Actually, I'm now happy to still be using my Note 3, rather than my tiny and aging DroidX.
I figured that I should be able to sell my phone for a reasonable amount and then buy the Developer's model when it appears.
I am finally happy with a cell phone after trying a number of different large screen models in a quest for the best.
Top marks for the Note 3, so far!

I don't understand why they would only release a dev edition that is locked to Verizon though. I'm in the UK and would love a SMN9005 dev edition.

These exclusives do not make business sense, the one point you'd think SAMSUNG would take notice of.

Same can be said of MOTOROLA w/their exclusives w/VZW.

If they are going to sell a "Developer Edition" then why the hell not just unlock all the bootloaders? What is the difference between locked and unlocked if they are virtually the same phone and the same price? Waste of time if you ask me. They might have sold 10 fold the amount of phones if they would have just released the original with an unlocked bootloader.

Doesn't make much sense on a business front if you ask me but oh well... The original can be rooted and Safe Strap installed to run any rom out now. Just can't flash kernels at this time.

first of all I have no idea what the other version is. Crazy as it might seem, I traded a new iphone 5s to get this phone and the watch. I love it. I am 76 years old and having fun with the phone and watch
