Root Should i root?

So I recently got a DroidX and I'm really enjoying it.

I, as both a geek and a logical thinker, want to get the full use out of my DroidX. I want to root it.

However I know that there is some anti root software that will brick my phone if I fail.

I was thinking of using the one-click PC software. What is its success rate? How concerned should I be about bricking? Can a bricked phone be fixed? Should/can I make a backup?

EDIT: All I really want is the free Wifi tethering. Is it worth the risk?
 
z4root is probably the easiest. You can download it from 4shared.com.

After you root, I would recommend making a backup. Download the Droid X Bootstrapper, put it on your Sd Card, go to Files in the app drawer, and click on it. It will install, then click "Bootstrap" and it should say "Success!" then hit reboot. After it reboots, navigate to backup/restore using the volume buttons and use the camera button as "okay." Then hit back up and let it go.

If you do end up bricking your phone (Which I have done once in the 2-3 months I have had it) you can use the SBF file to resurrect it. I had to use it the other day and it as exceptionally easy.
 
By the way, I don't plan on installing themes or anything. Just the tether app. Is there any security risk to that?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've never really rooted/jailbroken anything before, so I'd really appreciate if you'd PM me some info on rooting, backups and recovery, if it's not too much to ask.
 
If you're just gonna do it for the tether app, why not use something like PDAnet? Don't need root for that.
 
root it, i just got my droid x few weeks ago, played around with it then 2.3.340 came, managed to brick it, sbf back, and now running apex 1.3 wonderfully :D
 
Theres basically no risk in rooting and dwnlding a app like wireless tether. loading roms, themes and the like is where some risk comes into play.
 
Like others have said there is really no risk to rooting the phone. I have been rooted since the end of September, I got my phone at the start of August. The only question I ask myself now is why did I wait about two months to do it.

I did it myself for the wireless tether because we were having problems with our home modem. I quickly learned my phone could do soooo much more than what I was using it for. So while you say that is all you want for now, if you really want to unlock all that that X can do I would check out some of the work the developers have done, there are some really good ones.

I have not bricked my phone one time yet...knock on wood. However with the SBF's out there even if you do there is a way to fix the phone. I always make sure to read the instructions before doing anything a couple times and if I have questions I will ask, the members in these forums are very helpful.

So bottom line is, there is really no risk right now to doing anything.
 
Not to point out the obvious, but since you did post your question in the "All things Root" section of the DX forums, you're probably going to get somewhat of a skewed opinion set. ;)

Why, you may be wondering, even if you're not going to try out custom ROM's etc? Because it gives a lot more options in certain programs that you wouldn't have otherwise. For instance, I have the app "My Backup Pro". If the phone is unrooted, it will backup your phone but it won't be able to put the links back into Market for getting updates, so it's a real PITA. If you have root, it will ask if it can have superuser permissions and then when you backup and restore, it will restore all your apps with market links so that you pick right back up and get updates without having to manually do any downloading. Well worth it.

I rooted both my DX and my husband's as well. He didn't even know I had done that for him till a few days ago (and it's been rooted for months). He has no interest in custom ROM's, etc but it still gives extra functionality to the phone. I had no plans to try any ROM's until Stevens58 recommended I justs give the Apex 1.3 a try and since I was in the hospital at the time with little else to do, I took the chance on it. SO GLAD I DID! I didn't really believe it would be that much different but it's much snappier and I just love it.

I've used a few different root methods and haven't had any problems. (One great thing about the DX because I tried as hard as I could to root my old Droid Inc and never could get it to). Bottom line is, try it. Most all methods allow you to unroot it or you can SBF back to an official version and no one will be the wiser. It's just a great thing to have and opens up a lot of possibilities, whether or not you want to take it any further is completely up to you. :)
