Should I still get the Eris

Am I the onyy one that thinks this is terrible reasoning?
Don't get me wrong... for a lot of things it does make sense to weight out the cost difference over time...

But if every time you're going to buy something you buy the more expensive/top of the line item available because "it's only X more a month"...
you'll be broke in no time.
I think what he said originally in his first post is the smartest thing for him (maybe not for you) when he said he didn't want to pay $200 for the Incredible when there's a phone right next to it for $20.
Yup. It's very American reasoning though.

I believe figuring things in cost over time is one of the best ways to budget. I'm not saying you should buy the top of the line "only because its x amount more a month" I'm just saying that IF you can afford an extra seven dollars a month, it would be worth it.

I wouldn't normally say to break things down over time, except you are going to be locked in to this phone for 12-24 months if you sign a 2yr contract so figuring it out over that time is very good idea.

I think for $20 the Eris is an amazing phone hell even for the $100 I speent for mine It's still a good deal. But I jumped shipped to the Incredible and I think the $200 is still an amazing deal

After reading these forums and all the problems people are having with this phone after its update... and you are still considering buying? As a consumer if I enter a single forum and find this number of issues with a product... I won't go near it.

Eris v. 1.5 was great. 2.1 not so much. If you are waiting for maybe 2.1.5 there is no promise. At this point with the required 12 or 24 month contract... I would pass for a phone that has actual new hardware not 2 year old hardware that is EOL'd.

IMHO...

Going from 1.5 to 2.1 was the best thing I did with the Eris made it 100% better

Half of the "problems" that are on this forum are because they did a direct upgrade from 1.5 to 2.1. Do a factory reset right after you upgrade, and you'll be perfectly fine. Some on here are legitimate problems with 2.1, but if you are going to buy a smartphone, you have to realize that there are going to be bugs. If someone creates a flawless, bugless, and feature filled phone that pleases everyone, you let me know.

And if these are problems with the software (after a factory reset), wouldn't it be safe to say that the other Android phones would have similar issues? Software bugs are *usually* not hardware specific.

Please don't beat me for saying this in an Eris forum, but if I had to do it again, I might consider the Moto Droid to be honest... That is, if you can live with carrying around a giant brick in your pocket. I believe the price difference these days is pretty minimal...

i think i would have too. the eris was my first smartphone>> coming from an LG dare.

i think i should have gotton the droid because not only is it faster and it gets the updates faster, but it also spoiled me with sense. i love it but i dont know if it is worth waiting so long for the updates.

but now i dont know if i can have an android phone without sense now. :/ i just dont like vanilla android but i think if i had started out with it i would have been just fine...

kinda like driving a bentley with a toyota engine then going to a hyundai with a farrari engine. i mean there is nothing wrong with the hyundai and it drives really great but will it ever be nice and comfortable as the bentley << does that analogy even make sense?? haha

even of you do a factory reset you are still going from 1.5 to 2.1 so why does that make a difference?

... maybe it is obvious and i will be hitting myself on the head when you tell me but i can't think of it...

There has been a lot of positive feedback regarding the factory reset after the update. It just seems to help correct many bugs that some of the users are experiencing. I did a factory reset before and after installing each of the leaks, and my Eris operates pretty solid.

oh. thanks... wasnt aware of that. i didnt need to do that for the leaks i did.. but if it works for other then ok. :):rolleyes:

If you've realized you don't need to have the highest end experience and you are looking for the best deal...
YES. Get the Eris.
A co-worker of mine had a smartphone a few years old and even though it was no longer supported he was still able to keep it current (as current as the hardware would let it be) by installing new apps and programs. He basically started emulating my Droid Eris since he liked it so much.
I got the Eris in the beginning of this year and, 2 of them for $99, and while I take good care of mine my girlfriend has repeatedly dropped it on concrete and even let it take a ride in the washing machine. IT STILL WORKS. (The rice trick worked like a charm.)
My $.02 says to hold off on getting the Incredible, unless you are eligible for an upgrade or some other deal, get the Eris for now and upgrade in the near future when Verizon has their 4G network up and running. I've learned that there's no sense chasing the latest and greatest as it's usually trumped 6 months down the road.
And just think how impressed you'll be with the new phones when it's upgrade time.
