Help Should I upgrade my new Ace 2 from Android 2.3 ?

I'm about to get a new Galaxy Ace 2 running Android 2.3. Does 2.3 still work fine? Should I stick with that or immediately update it to eg 4.4? Is it straightforward to upgrade an Ace 2 to 4.4? Or, if I do, does 4.4 cause more bug problems than it's worth? Any advice much appreciated.

2.3 will be limited, potentially, with respect to new apps / upgrades -- there is only so much backward compatability that developers can build in, and at some point that will become an issue (depending on how you use the phone, and how long you plan to use it).

Regarding external memory, what I mean is that at some point (not sure if it was 4.2 or 4.3) Android tightened up security, by restricting what an app could access on the external card. Apps no longer could access anything/everything, rather only a folder they were specificaly allowed to access. If you're starting fresh, that shouldn't be a big problem (if at all). The upshot is that, for an app that creates content, you can't choose among different folders for storage; if I caption a picture, some times I want to save it in folder 'screnshots', other times for a different image, 'family_pics' -- my captioning app can't do that now, unless that restriction has been circumvented via running a root-required app to restore my freedom to choose.

Hope this helps & isn't too rambling.

Much appreciated. I intend to download maybe 6 or 8 apps and keep the phone for a couple of years. So, bottom line, if you were me, would you upgrade the new phone from 2.3 to 4.4 before doing anything, or just stick with 2.3?

Really, it's a toss-up of sorts. I'm ignorant of the specs of your new phone, so can't predict if 4.4 will strain it -- in your place, I'd look for others who have upgraded (keeping in mind that more folks post about problems than those who post that everything is *great!*) and see what issues they've had. You could also defer the upgrade and see how 2.3 fits your needs/usage -- with only 6 or 8 apps, if you do decide to upgrade, it's not too daunting a job to need to reinstall if necessary. RA

EDIT: so, I got curious, and searched for the phone's specs:

I am thinking the upgrade might not be the best thing to do -- the phone has limited memory and a slow processor, both of which will impact the performance of 4.4
