Should i wait?

I am debating on whether to buy an Iphone 4 or HTC desire
I am waiting for the release of iphone 4 - for the reviews
and also waiting to see the performance of 2.2 on htc desire
i am no troll.

It's an Apple device so you can bet all the reviews, especially from engadget and tech-crunch, are going to say it's the most fantastic thing ever.

The iPad got almost universal praise, despite being a pointless piece of shit.

iPhone 4 is a decent phone, but as long as you're planning on waiting, why not wait an extra month or two? The iPhone has just drawn level with the current gen of Android phones, but the ones coming in the second half of this year and first quarter 2011 are going to make it look like something out of the stone age.

The speaker is very poor for a start, useless as a speaker phone

I guess the speaker on the iPhone _is_ better. But the speaker on Desire is far from being poor....

, horrible as sat nav and garbage for music/films you tube DL's etc. You tube, whats that all about why bother watching it with the very poor quality.

Desire is GREAT as sat nav (I use MotoNav).
YouTube never looked better for me.

Screen garbage in daylight, yeah I can see it on an angle better than other phones but why on earth would I want to do that.

Again not true. I have compared just yesterday it to the iPhone 3GS in sunlight and the desire was better let alone in the "shadow" where Desire beats the 3GS screen by really far. WTF are you talking about?!?! Maybe some people don't know how to put the screen brightness on Desire to max value...

Already reached the limit on app storage, not interested in rooting to obtain it and 2.2 isnt out so that doesnt matter.

Then maybe you should uninstall some apps you don't use.

Battery is poor plus why it wont charge to 100% and stay there on charge is just stupid, I can pick it up in the morn from charging overnight and its dropped to 89%!

I really don't understand why so many people complain about the battery. I find it very good on my Desire. Of course, if you surf all day it will get empty pretty soon. Look at laptop batteries which are waaaaaaay bigger (of course it has a bigger screen). Try to surf for 2 hours and it will be empty. Nobody complains about that so much?!

Android well, come on its not that good, slow at times, apps are way poorer than Iphone plus market is full of asian porn crap, not as smooth as Iphone and doesnt look as good.

Do you really own a Desire or are you just trolling??? Desire is a lot faster than iPhone 3GS. Apps look better every day and they look very good even now. The iphone has a bit more polished interface, but that's it.

And to end it all the handset looks and feels like cheap plastic.

Now I don't believe you even held a Desire in your hands.

Stop criticizing the IMHO best phone on the market!

For the OP: get the Desire, you won't be sorry...

I would wait if I knew exactly what was going to be released in 2 months.
I can wait till august end with no problem but i want to know what is going to be released.

I have heard rumors abour a 1.5ghz HTC phone named scorpion but its all just rumors till i know for sure via an HTC announcement.

Also, if i buy an iPhone then i dont have to worry about buying another music player since i heard that the music player on HTC Desire isn't very good.

Thanks everybody for the help! Well, I guess a couple months of patience will not do me any harm (even though i don't see my self buying a different phone;))

The Desire may be capable of faster speeds than the 3gs, but that's not what happens in practice. Android is the bottleneck now, not the specs. My Desire is way slower in use than my 3gs. It's a fact mate - I have both and swap the cards over every couple of days.

Now, I'm the first to admit - the card spends more time in the Desire - but then the 3gs is a year old now. Would I even be looking at the Desire a year from now? lol.
I miss itunes integration (Amazon MP3 store is a bit of a joke) - I miss decent apps - and I don't like feeling like I own a phone that's in perpetual beta phase.
I LOVE Google Listen, love the screen (indoors), love the widgets. The rest will need to catch up pretty soon - the excuse of it being a new OS is looking more and feeble by the day. Maybe the new Palm guy Duarte will add some sparkle? Maybe FroYo will release the choke-hold that 2.1 has on devices.

Who knows?

I have had 2 desires I sent the first one back hoping the speaker was faulty but it wasnt, the second one is just as rubbish.

I'm not even going to address any of your comments as I believe what I see and hear and I have compared them both.

This made me LOL, but its true! Apple's marketing is the best on the planet and sucks all the suckers in. Sorry its off topic :)

I don't regret getting my Desire and I'm looking forward to seeing what's available from HTC and Android in a couple of years when it's time to upgrade.
iPhone is just a no no as far as I'm concerned as iTunes is a pile of junk and I wouldn't want to be tied down to it.

The thing I hate about iTunes is that it's the largest online music store on the planet, and it can preserve and update my iPhone simply and quickly. Oh, and I hate that it works seamlessly on the handset with the iPod function and the app store.

I hate being tied to an ecosystem with over 200,000 apps.

Terrible.

Personally I don't like Apple's dictatorship-like way of doing things. Why dont they offer a way of allowing people to install apps outside of their app store if they want to? They don't have to control everything that people can install on their devices. And the way they try to resell old features is laughable. Video chatting over 3G has been around since 2004 or perhaps earlier, yet they try to sell their iPhone 4 to iPhone 4, WiFi only video chat as something amazing? Pur-lease.

The Desire's music player is fine. It plays songs, lets you create and organise playlists, lets you browse by genre/album/artist/etc, what more would you need? :D

The point about front facing cameras is interesting. It'll either flop, or it'll do what the touchscreen form factor did in the hands of Apple. It had been around for donkey's years before the iPhone came out, and yet take a look at what's in your hand (your desire I mean;)). Take a look at any retailers shelves. You have to give credit where it's due.

Turn it on it's head: I wish Android apps had to go through some kind of Quality Control before being released on to the market. There's just so much rubbish out there. As for installing them from other sources: if you have your laptop or your iPhone, you're good to go.
I can't think of a time when I've been blown away with how I've installed an app other than that on my desire. I've able to do that for years on symbian.

The point is though: you don't like the way they do things. Fine. They don't MAKE you buy their products.
I come across WAAY more android fanboys than apple fanboys. It's a bit of a joke really - as you're both right.

Rubbish is subjective ;) I think it's great that with Android you get a choice. If you want to avoid the bad apps, well that's what download count and ratings are for - a 2* app with < 5k downloads is probably not very good, but a 5* app with > 250k downloads is likely good, as it must be doing something right to get all those users!

Anyway, I think the Apple vs. Android argument can be summed up in one sentence: If you want the freedom to do what you want with your device, get an Android, but if you want a more streamlined, simplistic and integrated user experience, get an iPhone.

It's possible, but not as elegantly as on Android.

If you want an iPhone, buy one. If not, get another device, maybe an Android device. I'm not sure what you hope to achieve posting the question on an Android forum and also on an iPhone forum - the outcome is fairly predictable.

apparently iPhone is just as customizable as an Android device once you jailbreak it.

Jailbreaking voids your warranty.

Just like pink water sensors, any sniff of a jailbroken iPhone and a smug looking "genius" from Apple will refuse to service your phone if you ever need to take it in.

How would you rate your tech ability between 1 to 10 (1 being "I can only just set the time on the microwave" - 10 being "Android Schmandroid, I'm writing my own OS")

Less than 5 = get the iPhone
More than 5 = Get the Desire

Not the quality phone I saw in the reviews while waiting for it since last year!

Juz got slightly annoyed by the comment. i appreciate that it's your personal experience with the htc desire but you probably haven't done enough to get the best out of the phone.

I use sygic mobile and its as good as the tomtom i have in car. rooting is actually a very simple process which i managed to root mine last nite in 15 mins (i too get frustrated by the lack of phone memory), now i have 60 apps installed with more than 100mb left.

Battery life is not great but with a few tweaks i can easily manage 1.5 day on average. screen on outdoors and speaker i agree are the worst part of the phone. i had to put a shortcut on homescreen to turn on brightness of screen when go outdoors and that kinda solve the problem. speaker for playing music is poor but it works fine as a speaker phone.

ps. theres an unofficial youtube HD app which you can easily google it.

It is over 5 so i will get the desire once i sell my old phone.

I think its just best to not be objective rather more realistic.

My take on the Desire is that its a gadget first and a phone last.

Whereas apple made a phone into a gadget.

FTR I dont own and never have owned an Iphone just compared them to my Desire which I waited for since last year and cant believe the hype that still surrounds it.

Great gadget, crap phone.
