Sidesync and Keyboard

Anyone know how to keep the internal keyboard (on screen keyboard) from coming up when using Sidesync from my PC? I have a Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and whenever I get to a text field, the virtual keyboard comes up and takes half the screen.

I found I can turn on my bluetooth keyboard which makes the virtual keyboard go away but the bluetooth keyboard goes to sleep after awhile so it would be nice if there was a setting or application that says I am using the keyboard on my PC so don't display the on screen keyboard. Seems it would be suppressed by default when connected from a PC...

Thanks for the welcome...

Looks like there are several null apps available, reading it appears they cause an invisible keyboard to display instead of the virtual one in the system.

That makes sense, except, what happens if you forget to turn this feature off? Does that mean I won't have a virtual keyboard to log on with? I ask because I often travel without an external keyboard and would hate to make my tablet useless because I can't log in to it.

I'm just switching from an iPad mini and assumed there was a setting somewhere that basically says don't display the on screen keyboard when I have an external one active. It seems to work when I'm using my bluetooth keyboard, just not when I connect with Sidesync...

You can have several keyboards installed alongside each other, and easily switch between them on demand. So if you forget to disable Null Keyboard, selecting a text input field will display a "Change input method" shortcut in your notification pulldown. Tap that, select the keyboard you want to use, and it's business as usual. :thumbsupdroid:

Good to know, thanks...

I think I found the secret, on the top of the screen shot is a setting that says, "use on -screen keyboard". Turning this setting off fixes my problem but allows the virtual keyboard to still work when needed. The problem is this setting seems to turn itself back on and I can't find it in the regular settings...

How can I get this setting to stay disabled? Is there another way to get to the setting except to wait for it to randomly appear??? My tablet is rooted, is there a way to get to this setting at a lower level so it stays off?

I believe you should be able to trigger that dialog by tapping the IME switcher notification when you have an input field selected. (I don't have a Samsung device so I don't know if they changed that...)

Cool, except what does "IME" stand for and where would I find the "IME switcher notification"?

Input ???

Sorry, IME == "Input Method Editor". Nerd way of saying software keyboard, pretty much. ;)

Again, I don't have a Samsung device, but you should/may get a "Select Input Method" notification when you tap on a text input field. :thumbsupdroid:

Ok, with you now... I'm learning to speak Nerd so don't give up on me... ROFL

The screenshot I posted must be the IME notification, the problem is the setting doesn't stay to keeping the on-screen keyboard turned off. It would be nice if it would default to off and have those that want both switch it on...

Does it only re-enable itself after a reboot?
Do what I do and keep your phone constantly on lol :D
Seriously though I know of bugs where settings unset themselves after an OS update and the only fix is a factory reset (maybe not worth the hassle)
But don't you get a shortcut to that IME screen in your notification drawer whenever a keyboard is on screen?
EDIT I don't, sorry, I just get the choice of keyboard where one of these no keyboard apps could be more handy

Yes, it and several other settings re-enable after reboots. That sucks...

The unfortunate part is sometimes resets are mandatory with this thing because it hangs from time to time...
