Signal bars decrease once screen is unlocked.

I have noticed on my Optimus V, shortly after I turn the screen on (it's been sleeping, so screen is off), that the signal bars decrease. As soon as I press a button to wake it up, I'll notice the signal at 4 or 5 bars, then it will decrease to 1 or 2. I have not moved the phone. Any ideas why this would happen?

Sometimes when I turn my 3g on through quick settings (its off most of the time) my phone will drop down to 1 or no bars like yours. I don't think its anything to worry about though ive made calls with zero bars before.
