Signal Boosters

I have seen quite a few signal boosters in the play store. Are they effective? Do they work? If they do work which one is most effective?

Put it this way: if there was some magic trick to make the phone radio more sensitive, that worked across all models of phone, is it plausible that it was figured out by some app developer but not the professional rf engineers, or that once it was known the manufacturers wouldn't have incorporated it into the firmware?

AFAIK those that do anything at all just force the phone to rescan more often. That may sometimes cause it to switch to a nearer basestation a little earlier than it would otherwise have done, which would result in a higher signal level being reported temporarily. Of course this would also reduce battery life, and does nothing really useful because if the phone actually needs to change stations it will.

I moved recently and get 0 bars in m back bedroom on t-mobile, my network of choice. I was going to post a similar thread a couple of nights ago but before I could I found this one http://androidforums.com/lounge/645222-signal-boosters.html and a couple more that totally agree with what Hadron says. There are some hardware products that grab cellphone signal from a tower and distibue it through your house but the system t-mobile offers is only for homes that do not share walls with another house. I live in an apartment so no subsidy for me. The darn thing costs $500 and that's not including shipping and I'd have to install it myself.

I have had positive results from using signal boosters and currently use signal repair (root) pro. I use it whenever I fall from from 4g lte to 3g. But it doesn't adversely affect my battery since it only activates when I us3 it

My opinion (as an electronics engineer) is that there is no chance that you can boost the signal with an app because that's a function of the hardware & firmware that can only be optimized by the engineers who designed the radio chips and phone.

However, apps can force the phone to roam or not roam or go to 4G or 3G based on the signals being received. The app's choice may be different than the cellular service provider's choice-- especially if you have free roaming like I do (on Sprint) your service provider would rather keep you on their own weak signal rather than pay a network-partner for your usage.

But one experiment trumps a thousand expert opinions. Try it and let us know.

All they do is turn flight mode on then off. sometimes doing that fixes a bad signal for me, makes the phone lock onto a stronger tower, so i bought a widget that does the whole flight mode cycle with one tap.
If turning flight mode on then off doesnt help you, none of these apps will so dont believe the crap some of them have in their description lol :)

Shame you can only download 2GB as 2*1GB. I'd like just just download 1*2GB. I suppose I could download 4GB and delete the unwanted DIMM, or upload it back to them, but it seems wasteful...
