Help Signal drops completely - HTC Desire S

Guys, hello there. This has been a marathon of a journey you have been on. Took me a good while to read through all the threads.

Over the weekend I have experienced 2 instances off 'total wipeout'. I am with Orange network but purchased phone via Carphone Warehouse.

The phone has been fine today but will be onto the CPW like a rash if I see it appearing again. Love the phone but pretty much raging as two months in to my contract CPW had to send the phone back to HTC as the battery catch was loose which ment the phone kept switching off.

Even though this is a separate fault. Does anyone have a view of on what my strategy should be when going into to speaking to CPW? The phone has been sent away already (which to just under 4 weeks), sending it back again will take another 3 weeks, and not even fix the issue?

Seems to me its a HTC problem and until they release a new update with a fix we are all in the poop.
Some people have asked for their phones to be returned and restored back to software version 1.28 which has resolved the problems.

You don't have to worry about it, it doesn't cause you any problems. It really only means you have even greater access to what you can do on the phone (ie running more powerful apps that require root).

As for not reading the instructions.. well, you were warned! But well done on following the guide otherwise and glad it worked for you.

I'm male, I don't do instructions!!!

The rooting didn't work, going to look into how to sort that out and see what I can get out of my phone from doing it.

since my phone is havign the same issues, i've been reading this thread for a week or two with nothing to add, but today i spoke to o2 and they have told me there's a new software version coming out on the 27/9/11

Has anyone had a look to see if the "new" O2 software is available yet?

I can't check as I dont have a Desire S anymore.

From the Apps Menu go to;

Settings -> About Phone -> Software update

And then click [Check now] button at the bottom of the screen.

And see if there is a later version available.

Not yet but soon I hope.
Its driving me nuts all the texts I'm not getting.

Just switched on the Orange ''signal boost'' app to see if it improves things at least while I'm at home.

Well, further to my post last week in which I detailed how the live chat person told me their tech department would get on to me (they never did), I called o2 tonight as this problem has been getting worse.

The girl was really nice, however she told me that she would email me a link to downgrade my phone... which I was thinking 'strange'. When I got the email it was simply a link to the support section of the HTC website. So now I'm left confused and annoyed. She said they would do a swap over for a brand new handset if that doesn't fix my issue, as its in my first 28 days of contract, but that means I'd get another desire s which will most likely have the same issue.

Feeling fed up.

I have a Desire S on Orange and have also experienced the same missed calls and sms everyone else has raised here.

I was just re-reading the thread and thinking of how to raise the issue with Orange and/or HTC when I thought I would just reconfirm that the issue is still there.

To my suprise I no longer seem to have a problem. I tried calling from a landline with the mobile network on all three settings (WCDMA/GSM/Auto) and the call came through. It also 'woke' the phone up when it was asleep. Then I had a mate send texts in all 3 modes and they also came through.

Just to confirm, I have the updates set to manual and checked before I did the testing. There was no update to apply.

My s/w versions are;

Android Version 2.3.3
HTC Sense 2.1
Baseband Version 20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M
Kernel version 2.6.35.10-g2ee27f5
Build number 1.47.61.1 CL78999 release-keys

I will give it a day being set on auto and report back.

The thing is, the error isn't consistent. Before I had my phone replaced, calls would sometimes come through, and sometimes not at all. That's what I hated the most - that I couldn't have complete faith in it, and that killed the point of having an at-all-times communication device.

I can't check as I dont have a Desire S anymore.

In a follow-up, eddyodwyer mentioned that the O2 rep said the update was called Mango.

Mango is the name of the Windows Phone 7.5 update which was scheduled for release on... 27th September. Nothing to do with Android phones.

Hey,

Just wanted to say cheers to everyone posting on this thread, it's been a massive help to me. I got a new HTC Desire S in August and have had this problem with losing signal ever since. I was sent a replacement but same problem. Called Phones4u today, they initially wanted to do a second replacement and made me talk to HTC which acknowledged the fault but said Phones4u needed to contact them not the customer. I called back Phones4u and the guy was amazingly helpful. He didn't say that they knew of any issue with HTC Desire S but did accept that HTC were acknowledging it. Then he offered me a replacement, I said I really wanted a HTC phone. He said he'd talk to some people and call me back. 3 hours later he called and offered me an HTC Sensation. Job done - no shouting, no arguing. Just good customer service when you can give them the facts.

... Assuming it turns up as promised.

Hi hamster_seller,

Thanks for posting and I am glad you have found this thread useful. As you can tell a lot of us have put in a lot of time and effort in to try get this problem recognised and acknowledged by the various network providers and HTC themselves, which now slowly seems to be happening.

I think that being offered a HTC Sensation from your provider shows good customer relations and that they are willing to help us out, as it is now a known problem with the Desire S software.

I have had my HTC Sensation for just over a week now and it is a cracking phone, and best of all I have had NO problems with my signal. So let

Orange signal boost app didn't help.

I'm still not getting all my texts through unless I restart the phone.

Come on HTC hurry up with the fix!!!!!!!!!

The update is for the HTC stock ROM only, not branded ROMs. I think it will be a little while longer before the branded versions are released.

But at least we know it's on its way.

Just decided to ask the o2 'guru' if they knew about the software update...check itout.

You're through to Guru stephen. stephen: Hi I'm stephen. How can I help?
Ammo: Hi, can you tell me if a software update for the desire s is coming out soon?
stephen: I'll check.
stephen: We have no notification now, but it will be updated on our website once out.
Ammo: where on your website will it be?
stephen: here
Ammo: ok. i hear Orange have sent one out for their customers, any idea if O2 will follow suit soon?
stephen: Yes we have received software queries and we too may send one out by email, you'll appreciate that as an employee this is not within my decision making.
Ammo: I understand that, however i assumed as a 'guru' you would be garnished with the information from O2.
stephen: Yes as and when we are updated we will communicate the same with you.
Ammo: thanks

helpful huh?

Can someone confirm the Gingerbread 2.3.5 update is available for unbranded phones and fixes the problems? Thanks

Mine is unbranded and rolled-back to 1.28.401.1 and it's still only offering me the 1.47.401.4 update.

Not that I'll be in any rush to install future OTA updates...

I've got the same problem: HTC Desire S, had it about 3 months, loses signal overnight and i either have to ring/text someone or restart the phone to get the signal back.

I did switch to GSM only one night and it still had a signal the day after?

I've emailed O2 who told me to take it into my local store but ive no desire (no pun intended!) to have it sent away and come back with the same problem.

So, im now resigned to either rolling back the software or waiting for an update to solve the problem.

Does the custom rom mentioned above work with O2? or doesnt it matter which network im on? If am invalidating the software im might as well go the whole way!

@ukhank

As long as you have the correct ROM for your phone, it won't matter what UK provider you have, they will work with them all.

I'm being sent a replacement desire s today, and I assume I'm right in thinking if it has the older software I should just refuse the update? And if it's already updated I'll have the same problem?

HYCAET,

If it has older software on it pre 1.47.206.2, then do not update and you should be fine.

The only problem is that (as we have already seen), replacement Desire S's will be sent out with the latest firmware 1.47.206.2 which is the problem software and you will continue to have the same problem unfortunately.
