Signal quality

Hey guys,

Looking for someone that has been using another VM phone and has now switched to the Evo V.

There are two specific things I'm looking for here....

1) Data speeds (3G obviously) in comparison to your old phone. Basically if you used your phone in certain places, what kind of speeds are you getting in comparison in those same places? Better, worse, the same?

2) Overall signal quality. In the same locations are you getting/holding a better signal than you might have on your previous phone. This is NOT about the number of bars, it is signal quality where you might have struggled to get data somewhere but now you either can't get anything or it is better than before.

The reason I'm looking into this is because my area at home is right on the edge of 3G. If the Evo is getting better reception then I can get a better connection. If it is the same, then I'm worried about how well the Evo is going to get data on a weak signal... I don't want to get stuck on 1x when I can at least squeak by with slow 3G now.

Thanks for any info. Actual speed tests would be amazing. In case there isn't much info about the signal and I do pop on the Evo then I'll come back and do my own results for everyone else.

First off, welcome to Androidforums hope you make it a site you visit daily!

Secondly, I have tested my girlfriend's EVO V 4G as far as WIFI, 3G, 4G, and overall call quality <--------comparing against the Motorola Triumph.

WIFI - Connected via wireless N I was getting about 12Mbps over the WIFI signal the overall line speed of the connection is 15Mbps. Motorola Triumph had a hard time locking on to the WIFI signal after finally getting it to lock on got around 12ishMbps download.

3G - Comparing the Motorola Triumph next to the EVO V 4G was like night and day. Motorola Triumph struggled to get over 1Mbps download and 233Kbps upload. EVO V achieved 2.9Mbps download and 523Kbps via 3G connection. Note: Used the phones in the same location to the same tower.

4G - Couldn't compare the Triumph to the EVO V since the Triumph isn't 4G capable. As far as 4G WiMax I got a "good signal" and achieved at download of 7Mbps and 1Mbps upload.

Call Signal - Both phones in the same location the Motorola Triumph got 2 out of 4 bars at -91dBm, the EVO V 4G had full signal. Do not know yet how to look to see the dBm on the EVO V 4G. Hope to have my EVO V in by tomorrow :D

Hope this helps you out ;)

Nice side by side write up.

Actually been stalking around androidforums for quite some time, just never needed to post anything because the people here are great about covering everything :)

That is exactly what I needed. We have a Triumph and an OV in the house. The OV will always show about the same -dBm, but will always get almost exactly twice the data rate of the Triumph...

Not sure if they have it updated for ICS, but Elixir 2 can show a widget that shows signal strength, may be able to use that to compare.

Hate to lose the grandfathered plan on the Triumph, but sounds like the 3VO has enough to warrant the price increase, especially since the tethering has already been cracked (not an abuser, just occasionally need for a tablet).

It really depends on your location. In my city, we have little to no 4G at all so I won't be able to try until I go to Rockville for University in the fall or probably Otakon in Baltimore next month. Apparently the only spot that has 4G in my town is down town... and it's fill of giant people and junkies. and their sad offspring. As previously mentioned, the Triumph doesn't have 4G.

That aside, 3G seems sightly better. Not by much. I got 1-2 bars in my room, work, and throughout my town. This was the same with Triumph.

WiFi seems the same with me. I never had any issues with it on both phones.

Not stock, but it is available on custom roms, works quite well. Back to the op, my Wifi is about twice as fast as my Triumph used to get and 3g is usually at least 4 times faster.
