Help Signal reception

I purchased the Rezound over Christmas break (I am a teacher). I noticed immediately that I never had all the service bars like I did on my Droid X, but it didn't really seem to effect anything, and I used mostly Wifi at home, so it wasn't a big deal. But now, I am back at school, and I can barely even get one tiny bar. I usually time out on any activity that Ido. My Droid X had no problems at all, full strength all the way.

Is there something that I can do? This is not going to work at all. Of course, I am past my 14 days, so I don't know what my options are.

Check your power settings. I know if I'm set to "Normal" then I get no 4G at home. If I'm at "performance" then I have no problems with signal strength.

I have it set on economy because if I have set any higher, it drops about 10% an hour without any activity at all. I have had it on for one hour so far today, and because I downloaded an app (or attempted to between time outs), it is already at 84 percent. It I do anything else on it, there is no way I will make it through the work day.

I'm so glad you posted this. I'm also coming from a Droid X. I never got great reception in my house with the X, but I could usually hold calls near windows fine. Now I'm dropping calls. Funny thing is side by side, the rezound is showing better signal strength!?

This post explained the power setting well.

Well, I have spent the better part of the day trying to understand signal strength. I never had to worry about it on my Droid X, so I didn't really know anything about it. I checked my signal strength and it was -102dbm, which is not good. Like I said, I never checked the signal strength for my X, so I have no idea what it registered here at school. I switched to 4g to see if that would make a difference and it went to -94dbm, which is better, but then my battery just starts dropping, so I went back to 3g.

I'm also a previous X owner. You can still fire it up and compare CDMA signal strength. I find the dBms on the Rezound to be roughly equal or better than the X. If you had a Gnex you would really notice how superior the X is in comparison.

Lots of ex X'ers here. The dx was superior to any phone I've owned for getting a data signal. That said the rezound seems to be almost as good.

I don't know what to tell you as far as your problem goes but you can try calling Verizon CS and explaining your signal issues. They may be willing to let you exchange it but I'm afraid you'll run into the same signal issues since the dx was just really outstanding for signal.

my htc droid inc didn't get as good a signal as my moto, gn, or my buddies OG. seems to be an htc staple, although the rezound seems to be an improvement.

if it's causing you probs, exchange it. you don't want probs for two years.

Well, today I brought my Xoom into work to try and compare signals. Sitting side by side the Rezound had -103dbm and the Xoom had -93dbm. So, I guess the signal strength is pretty crappy here, but the Droid X was so good, I never really noticed. I'll probably have issues with any phone.

I have to say that while I like this phone, I don't love it the way I did the X. Of course that could be because my X was my first Android after giving up my Blackberry. You know what they say about first loves :)

I guess I'll just have to get the huge extended battery. I carry the phone in my purse, so it's no big deal, but it just looks so big and not-very-cute in the pictures!

You can pick up the extended battery from verizon for half off, $30 instead of $60, use that while at school and use the standard on weekends...

I just downloaded a 717 MB map file in 8 minutes. I almost always have all bars. Its better then my Droid X was.

I don't pretend to be an engineer but the Xoom has much more space inside for an antenna. If you look at the inside case of the Rezound the antenna is clearly visible. I think a more apt comparison would be with another smartphone.

Well, it doesn't really matter, the issue is obviously signal strength. My Droid X could handle it fine, the Rezound, not so fine.

I noticed today my battery dropping even faster than usual. I checked battery usage and noticed that "cell standby" was really high, whereas usually it's display that's high. When I clicked on cell standby, it said 49% without a signal. Does that mean that 49% of the time my phone was searching for a signal and that's what is draining the battery?

Well it does matter in the sense that signal strength reception is determined in part by the receptor.... like the antenna.

As far as your signal loss, that's alarming. And yes it's killing your battery. I experienced the same thing on the Gnex. My signal loss today is zero. I'd get on over to a verizon store and show them yourself. There is something wrong.

After doing some searching, I discovered verizon has a no-fee signal booster you can buy. I found them on ebay (search 'verizon network extender')for about 1/3 the price verizon is charging. It will work for evdo data and voice, but not 3g or 4g. You plug it into an internet connection and it uses that connection to carry calls and EVDO data. I bought one and will report when it arrives. I have wifi for data, so as along as I can walk around my house and not loose signal, I'll be happy.

As for the dBs, In the same spot I was getting -98 on the X and -96 on the rezound.

Also I wanted to add this VERY cool fact: the rezound is capable of doing data while on a call, EVEN ON 3G! That's a definite plus over my X.

Maybe there is something wrong with the antenna connection in your battery cover, since that is where it is located? (if you take the cover off, you will see the antenna stuff on it). Also not sure which case if any, would do it, but maybe you are using a case that blocks the reception of the battery cover?

Your issue isn't normal for the rezound as many find it has great, if not better reception then many phones(but not all).

Try swaping out just the battery cover at verizon.

Same problem with mine. My Moto Droid 1 had a lot better signal than my Rezound. I live 8 blocks from a tower and look out my window and see the tower. My signal jumps between 2 to 3 bars and I hardly ever get 4 bars. My Droid 1 always has full bars and better DB signal. This is my 2nd Rezound and they were both the same. Plus HTC sent me another back cover because of the creaking sound, and it did not help with the signal or creaking issue. I also have the extended battery with the cover and did not help either. As far as the radio and signals go Motorola has been doing this for years and all the other manufactures has a lot of catching up to do.

Couple things, I've never experienced the time without signal in the battery info. It's always been continuous signal. There is an off chance that your antenna may defective, might want to call customer service. I wouldn't bother talking to in store employees, never have had any luck with them.

An option for battery is to carry a spare normal battery, I bought the thunderbolt battery only charger for three bucks and just keep the spare charged and carry it in the earphone case. That gives you 3300Mah of battery. The only hassle is popping the back off.

Good luck.

On my home screen, I have the clock widget which shows my city..Soddy Daisy, TN (I know, exciting metropolis here). Well, when I am at school, it changes to Tennessee. It's like it can't even zero in on a city. As soon as I get home (which is only about 2 miles from my school), it changes back to Soddy Daisy, and I looked at the signal strength and it was -64dbm.

So, I don't think anything is defective on the Rezound, I think it is entirely my reception here at school. For whatever reason, my Droid X had no problem with it.

I guess if I get the extended battery, it won't matter so much, it can sit here struggling all day, but I'll have enough juice to let it.
