Help silence ringer for text messages

Lurker
Is there no way to silence a ringer set for text message notifications? I don't think trimming mp3s is a good solution, and it appears this has been a problem for a while now looking through other phone threads. This seems like a pretty big oversight in functionality.

To clarify, I mean I want to stop the ringtone with a button if I receive a text, rather than having it play through the entire ringtone. I don't need to hear the entire thing if it's sitting on my desk, but I do want to hear the whole thing if I'm in another room. Other non-android phones would allow you press a button to stop the sound.

I've wondered the same thing. I think I'm just going to create a new scene and have everything set to silent. Then, if I want a silent mode, I'll just use that scene.

lolz, well i dont know if i read rite, but you can silence the notifications sound when you receive text, go to your txt main page, where you see all the people you have been sending txt to, press menu, and go to settings, nd unckeck play notification sound!! NO MORE SOUND!!

I edited my main message, but to clear up the confusion I meant I want to be able to stop the sound from playing through with the hit of a button (preferably the power/sleep or rocker buttons, but even if it was swiping the unlock bar or something that would be cool as well.

Long story short...NO!!!

This is a major fail for HTC!!

This drives me up a wall!!!!!!!!!! On the Hero & hear the Evo has the same issue which is on order to upgrade to 2.2

Have seen many posts on this and no real resolution.

There is no one area in the settings to control all the ringtones..each ringtone is controlled individually by each program. Can deal with what.. but

For email only I use a stock midi ringtone.. short simple since 25-100+ emails can come through in a day and many in multiples of 2+ in a minute.

For all other things - Phone, messaging, Twitter & Facebook I use a mp3 ringtone that is 30 seconds long.

When the phone rings the volume up button silences the phone ringtone..

For every other ringtone, Twitter, Facebook & Messaging etc. no button on the phone when locked will silence the ringtone.. 30 seconds of un stoppable music.. very annoying.

Was with my buddy having lunch lastweek and he knows his Incredible inside and out since he is a Linux dev. He uses midi ringtones for everything except the phone so he has not knows this issue.. Eating lunch and text comes through playing ACDC, its set to a semi loud ring..(Glad it wasnt a 2Pac or Capone type ringtone) have to put the food down, pick up the phone & I show him I hit every button on that phone..nothing would silence it..by this time its 15 seconds into the ringtone..Had to unlock and silence the phone..

I usually have my explicit ringtones set for 3 seconds of clean music before the explicit starts, since last phone was a BB, not a big deal to reach down and hit the vol button to silence it.. the Android requires me to take it out to silence "every" ringtone..come on!

There is a program called phone flip which only works when the phone is out of the holster and the phone "has" to be turned over for the full 30 seconds. Once turned over within the 30 seconds the ringtone starts up again until 30 seconds is up.

Silence is an option but with a busy day walking sometimes the vibrate is not felt. Carrying items with the BB it was simple with a finger touch the volume up button to silence any ringtone. With the Android it requires a free hand to pull the phone out, unlock and enter the program causing the ringtone to go off and silence it. Handcent SMS does give me a pop up, still have to unlock the phone and click the x. Annoying if 20+ texts come across in an hour.

I sincerely hope 2.2 addresses this issue!!!

I agree. Hope this is fixed in 2.2! Seems like such an easy thing to do, and so prevalent on other OS...

You want to know you have the text--you don't want it totally silenced before you get the notification--but if you happen to be right there or out some place or talking to someone in real life, you don't want it to go on and on! I've chosen a very brief 3 note notification for this reason, but I shouldn't have to do that.

I love my EVO, but after 3 days this is already started to annoy the sh*t out of me since I use my phone for messaging more than phoning. I would pay for an app that would address this--is it possible that there isn't one? That seems odd to me...

Do not not of an app that makes an easy fix. Phone Flip is a work around but no where close to a 100% fix. Since I have the Hero I have to use a custom rom for 2.2. I have more hope the custom rommers will address this issue than a carrier update would..we still dont know what is in the Evo 2.2..waiting :)

I stumbled across this after ending up here in my search for an answer and am now posting the answer after I didn't find it.

While the phone is unlocked, you have to touch the update notification bar to shut it up. Pic attached.

Hope this helps someone.

everyone here is very much aware that we have to unlock the phone, then swipe the notification bar to silence these audible notifications.

we're trying to address the issue in which the end user is unable to silence said audible ringtone without having to go thru the process of swiping unlock, entering unlock pattern if applicable, then swiping the notification, then relocking, and placing back in your pocket. it SHOULD have an easy way, much like EVERY OTHER PHONE IN THE WORLD, where all you should do is push the power/lock button and it should silence any incoming audible notification, period. there are too many steps to silence if one has a 45 second loud mp3 playing for a text msg.

fix your **** android, i work for at&t, i get this **** all day. iphone's are blowing you out of the water atm. l2dev, scrubs.

Does holding the phone face down stop all sounds? Like when you get a call and you hold it face down it will silence the ringing..

only on a call from what I remember. I am confused....why would one leave an annoying ringer intact...why not change the notification for messages to something more discreet.

anywho...on my phone I simply press the vol down button one time and the notification immediately stops.

I'm not sure if it might help, but from your messages screen go to:

Menu - settings and scroll down to notification sound settings where you can change the tone or remove it completely.

Also if you use the Gmail app you can do the same thing, from inside the app you can go to:

Menu - More- Settings -
and scroll down to choose a ringtone and/or vibrate settings so that you can have a specific sound for your incoming emails.

It helps to identify whether your getting incoming emails or text message notifications. Then you can have a short or silent ring for one thing and a different sound for your emails.
