Help silence SMS notification

I thought the way to silence the SMS notification and ringer was turn over the phone but it doesn't work on the EVO LTE. Is there something else that will do this?

I silence the ringer while ringing by hitting the volume down once. Not sure about texts. I like my phone to ring and text to silent. In the stock text app, you can goto Menu-Settings-Notifications". I unchecked play notification sound. Not sure if either will help you, but those are the only 2 things I can think of.
