I must say, for those that haven't done this yet, I highly recommend downloading the apk that was provided through the Motorola forums rather than the Silent Snap app that's available in the market. Reason is, the apk from the Motorola forums gets rid of the snap sound on both the FFC, and RFC. The Silent Snap app in the market only makes the RFC silent, not the FFC.

At first, I had silent snap on there and didn't mind it at all because it worked perfectly with the RFC. Then, the first time I used the FFC with silent snap loaded up, I heard the sound and though, "Hmmm, that's weird. Why did it make a sound?"...LOL...so I uninstalled, loaded up the custom apk, and tried again. Once that worked flawlessly, I removed silent snap from my appbrain backup and Astro backup.
 
Most know, some don't, that the camera sound is included as an effort to head off law suits aimed at carriers and device manufacturers by people (mostly women) who do not want "candid" pictures taken of them in public, etc.
 
Public is public--private is private. Anyone who doesn't know that still and video cameras are EVERYWHERE now and act accordingly deserves what they get. Too late for manufacturers or government regulation to change this--the horse left the barn long ago.

The "candid" pics which generate concern are those usually called "upskirt" pics, many of which are taken of unsuspecting women and girls shopping at malls, etc. Some are even taken of them using a restroom stall.

Anyone with a female loved one (wife, mom, sister, etc) would not be happy knowing she could be victimized by such people. The idea is that the camera sound could help in such situations.

While this scenario undoubtedly exists and is unfortunate, requiring the phone to make a shutter noise is not really a solution to that problem. There are plenty of cameras that don't have a shutter sound, and as demonstrated by this thread even the phones that have the shutter sound can be modified to remove it. So someone who wants to, for example, take pictures of women in bathroom stalls could probably choose a different camera.

Meanwhile there are plenty legitimate situations where one might like to take a picture without an extremely loud shutter sound.
 
Well, they're trying. I imagine that at the meetings about the cam/candid pics issue, they try to come up with something that they, as a company, can show is their effort to have their product not be involved in those invasion of privacy activities.
 
The original link is gone. And once I DID find the appropriate link, the ONLY option is to root the phone to shut the shutter sound off, which voids the warranty. Thanks, Motorola.

And FYI, all of us has to suffer because they didn't want the pervs to snap secret pictures. Sheesh.
