Silent bug, Verizon and me

It is supposed to bring the volume of the ringer way down as soon as the device is physically moved on incoming calls while ringing. I think it's one of the sillier ideas on a phone.. but that's just my opinion. ;)

Frisco, ho do you set it?
Does it go back up after the call is over?

AQuick followup:

After the HTC tech I talked with a VZW tech just a few minutes ago.

I described her the silent bug problem on 2.1.

She said she is a Droid user and her daughter has an Eris.
She said she had frequent freezeup on her Droid and now she reccomends to do one reboot every day. She says she had not had a problem since she has been doing this.

She made a mark on my file about my complain and recommended to try the once-a-day reboot for a week. If the problem persists, the store will issue a new phone.

I will try this reboot thing each night, will see how it goes.
I am a bit worried about the exchange - they perhaps would give me a refurb, and there is no guarantie that I won't end up with the same problem.

I was doing the reboot thing several times a day for the last two days. I had thought that since I used the navigation that somehow locked the phone up so I did a battery pull and the phone worked for a few hours. Had to reset again later the same day. Since I have unchecked the quiet ring on pick up (fingers crossed) I have not had any lag or issues with the silent bug.

Good to see more success with that simple fix.

It is times like this that I wish the manufacturer, HTC in this case, had a bug report form on their support site such as the types seen on most Linux distro support pages.

Wish I wasn't so damn honest. Then I could just claim this issue and they'd me a new, root-able device.

Try more honesty, if you want a rootable device. You have a 50/50 chance of getting "yes."

Just say, "I want my 1.5 back. 2.1 does not suit my purposes and 1.5 does."

anybody who has this try going back to 1.5 and see if the bug remains?

To the best of my knowledge the 'silent issue' was never a problem on any 1.5 devices. I, as a former 2.1 silent issue sufferer, have not had the silent bug since getting a new 1.5 device and rooting it to 2.1. I have used 5 or 6 different roms and none of them have had the issue.

In my unprofessional and personal opinion, the silent issue is a hardware problem exploited by something in the 2.1 leak versions only. I have yet to hear of someone who received the 2.1 OTA, or went 2.1 root, and had the silent issue.

Every person I know with an Eris got the silent issue from the OTA. All are in the process of replacing their devices. I'm the only one who has not. I used the leaks.

edit: unless you're referring to only people who rooted in 2.1.

I did not know there were people who received the OTA and got the silent issue. The few people around me with an Eris upgraded successfully with no bugs.

It happens on the OTA too. I was in the same boat as you, wanting to root. I called *611 and explained the issue. They are sending me a new phone. I don't see any reason to feel guilty, I didn't fib at all. He never asked if I was on a leak, lol.

So the problem may be related to the proximity sensor then.

[edit]: I'm on a call to a long menu at my bank, attempting to make it happen by moving the phone away and bringing it back every several seconds.. hasn't happened yet.

I second the proximity sensor. Almost EVERY time I get the silent bug is when I pull the phone away from my face. Only once or twice has it gone silent during a call in the past couple months.

I have two Erises, one rooted, the other OTA. My rooted one has only seen the issue once. The other, that has just the OTA, has seen it multiple times (3 times just today).

I will be contacting Verizion and HTC to find out about the phone issue.

I wonder if everyone is on the same page about the silent bug. Some report being able to fix it by simply turning off the quiet ring on pickup setting and I'm wondering if perhaps your ringer is not working or something and you may be calling this the same thing though you have a different issue as those whose phone just goes completely silent during a call.

As far as calling in. I'm impressed that they are replacing over the phone. I've called in the past and they told me to go to a store to have them verify the problem.
