Help "SIM card is locked" Message

Lurker
I've followed the instructions to unlock my Atrix 4G phone to no avail. I've gone round and round with AT&T, Motorola, and T-Mobile (the provider here in Europe that I want to use while traveling abroad).

The first time I entered the unlock code, I received an error message. I called AT&T and had them walk me through the steps, error message again. Then they took me through a convoluted process wherein I entered AT&T's PUK codes and such. Then I tried entering T-Mobile's PUK code. At that point it asked me to create my own PIN. I did that, but got an error message!

Now the screen says "SIM card is locked" and it prompts me to enter a pin. I tried to enter the AT&T unlock code here but got an error message stating I only have 2 more tries ("Incorrect PIN code. Number of retry left 2").

Is this a PIN to unlock the SIM card rather than to unlock the phone? I have a 4-digit PIN for my T-Mobile SIM card but not sure if this is what it is asking for.

When your SIM card is locked, it would be a different code, that you set up like your pass lock code, to get into you phone. Your SIM will be fried once all your attemps are used up and you will have to get another one.

Can you tell me if I'm supposed to enter in the PIN that T-Mobile provided me when I bought their sim card? Or am I supposed to have some other PIN from when I originally bought the phone from AT&T?

Also, the very first time I put in the other provider's sim card (T-Mobile), my phone did not prompt me for an unlock code. Instead it asked me for a SIM pin. When I entered the unlock code, it told me it was the incorrect code. I've read elsewhere online that if the phone doesn't specifically prompt me to enter a "subsidy unlock code" or an "unlock code", I'm supposed to type "#32# " or "#073887*" in order to get to the unlock screen. This is not what AT&T tells me so not sure what to believe.

At this point I'm not even sure if I've successfully unlocked the phone since it has never asked for the "unlock" code, only the SIM Pin.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!

From what I remember, you would have had to set up the SIM Pin lock code. What this does is lock the SIM so that no one else can place it in another phone and use or see the data on it. If you didn't set up the pin yourself, take it back to T-Mobil and have them fix it.
