Root SIM Unlock Question

I called MetroPCS today to get a sim unlock code from them for my Zmax, and they gave me a code, but in the past there's usually a dialer code you enter then enter the unlock code, however they told me I have to put the sim from another company in first and then it'll let me sim unlock.

Anyone done this yet?
 
That's exactly how it worked with me. Got the unlock code from an eBay auction.

Plopped in the new TMo SIM card (it had MPCS SIM card).

Unlock code screen popped up.

Entered code.

ZMax unlocked.

I agree put in another company's Sim card and unlock . Waiting for my unlock code from metro myself,but I've unlocked an f6 and 3 Moto e for cousins to use overseas. Hope this helps.

I have a question did metro give you the unlock code right away?. They told me they'd email it to me?. That confused me. Sorry for hijacking the thread just have to know.
