Root Simple unrEVOked 3 rooting for stock Incredible or Evo on 2.2

I'll take a shot. I think that you already have to have your phone plugged in and showing in device manager BEFORE you open "reflash.exe". I believe it looks for the phone as soon as it's open and then just stops when it doesn't find one, it doesn't sit and wait for the phone.

I hope that helps

I tried with my phone already plugged in with debugging on and also with Unrevoked 3.21 on then plugged my phone in. Nothing happens either way. I'm at a loss here....

I am so pumped to root my phone. I've been waiting for this to be released. You're instructions seem great after reading them about half a dozen times now!

I'm by no means an expert myself. I just rooted mine the other night. But I had a similar problem with reflash that turned out to be a bad download. Try downloading it again.

If that isn't it, then it might be a driver problem. What does it say in Device manager when your phone is connected. In Windows 7, mine says "my htc". It's different for other versions of Windows.

Wow! What awesome instructions-- I have never rooted, and am not the most technologically inclined, and I did this in less than 10 minutes without a single problem at all! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this up!!

MikiBee, you're welcome! Credit goes to several people on the IRC test channel, who fed back adjustments and additions based on their experience. The result is truly a community work.

Thank you Bob! This is what I have been waiting for. I have been wanting to root and was just biding my time, till now! Thank you to all who worked on this, especially the unrEVOked team for all their efforts. Time to play!

I installed all the Drivers and my device manager says Android phone, ADB. I downloaded the Unrevoked 3.21 and it gives me the reflash package.exe file. I open it up and it has a big pop up box that says Unrevoked3, Painless root and reflash, Plug phone in etc....

I plug my phone in and enable debugging mode and nothing happens. I have no HTC software on my PC, I have no verizon software on my PC.

What am I doing wrong here?

You need to install HTC sync and then uninstall it (Sync not the drivers) . The unrEVOked pakage needs the drivers to work.

He said it his post that he already "loaded the drivers" but I hope you're right and that's his problem, because it's an easy fix.

Rooted! :D Thank you for the excellent instructions.

I think I will follow what seems to be the accepted procedure of leaving the bloatectomy until tomorrow and just basking in my rootedness tonight.

Chuck Norris Mode in Titanium Backup works wonders.

The first part is an old wives' tale, the second part is true. The problem is that the HTC drivers don't have the HBOOT interface and rooting will get stuck part way through.

Then for the entire process

Simple unrEVOked 3 rooting for stock Incredible or Evo on 2.2 - Android Forums

After spending many hours online helping people get their Incredible and Evo phones rooted with the unrEVOked 3.21 Reflash tool, I've learned a lot. I rooted my Incredible which has the OTA 2.2 update as well, so I have personal experience. UnrEVOked 3.21 is a 1-click rooting program. When it's done, you'll have a fully rooted phone with S-OFF and Superuser installed.

This guide is for people with the Incredible or Evo running "stock" Android 2.2. The phone can have been shipped with Android 2.2 or received the "Over The Air" update. In either case, again, we're talking about a stock phone running 2.2.

Preparation - Windows:
  1. You must install the HBOOT-Capable Universal Drivers. Read and follow the article to the letter. There is a ton of bad advice floating around on the IRC channel and in forums!.
  2. Re-read Step 1. The #1 problem for people is not having the right drivers installed. Try to get past your A.D.D. and do Step 1 all the way to seeing the Device Manager as shown at the bottom of that article.
  3. Unplug USB.
  4. Shut down the phone.

Rooting the Phone:
  1. Get the Reflash.exe program for Android 2.2 Incredible/Evo. Pick the one for your OS (Mac, Windows, or Linux). This program runs on your computer, not on the phone!
  2. Verify that you have an SD Card installed with at least 2Gb free space. If the SD is smaller than 4Gb, make sure it is FAT32 formatted. Look at it on your PC or Mac to be sure.
  3. Boot the phone normally.
  4. Enable USB Debugging (Settings, Applications, Development).
  5. Enable Unknown Sources (Settings, Applications at the top).
  6. Enable USB "Ask Me" mode (Settings, Connect to PC).
  7. Plug in the USB cable and choose Charge Only on the phone. On the Mac you may get an error about not being able to mount, click Ignore.
  8. On Windows (only), open the Device Manager and verify that you see the Android listed for ADB as shown in the pix at the bottom of the article linked-to in Preparation-Windows above.
  9. Run Reflash on the PC/Max/Linux system.

If you did everything right, and if your phone is a stock 2.2 Incredible or Evo, Reflash will come up and start the rooting process.

Be patient! The process involves several (4) reboots and some long periods of apparent inactivity. Let it go. Wait for at least 5 minutes before deciding it has become stuck.

How to know it worked:
Once the Reflash process completes (5 or so minutes), unplug USB and reboot the phone. It will look normal. Open the App tray and look for the Superuser app. If you open Superuser it will be blank, that's normal. For final confirmation, reboot the phone into HBOOT and see if it says S-OFF at the top. If so, you're rooted!

Backing up the phone:
Now that you're rooted and in HBOOT, it's time to do a complete backup of the phone (a.k.a. Nandroid backup). DO THIS NOW!
  1. In HBOOT, using the volume buttons move to RECOVERY and press the Power button. The phone will appear to reboot but it will end up in the ClockWorkMod recovery screen. From now on use the trackball on the Incredible (click to select), and the volume up/down on the Evo (power to select).
  2. Move to Backup and Recovery, then select. This will show the Backup and Recovery menu. NOTE: You might have to select Nandroid first (info from IRC user, I didn't).
  3. Move to Backup
  4. Select to start the backup.
  5. When the backup completes (several minutes), press the power button to return to the main ClockWorkMod menu
  6. Select Reboot System, go.
When the phone boots to its normal mode, you're done! Now you can enjoy the benefits of root. I'll leave all of that to other sources on the net.

Problems?
If the above is followed to the letter, your chances of problems are slim to none. If you have A.D.D. and can't follow the directions, you probably shouldn't be rooting anyway :D Here are some things to try if it dodn't work:
  • Before deciding it failed, boot the phone and look for the Superuser app. It might have actually worked!
  • Try running Reflash again with the phone in the correct state as instructed above.
  • Go back and really follow the directions for installing the drivers. Some people just don't get it.
  • If the phone seems to be bricked, do a battery pull reboot. In 5 days of working with the RC on the IRC channel, there were no bricks.

This guide is very informative to me and has me really considering rooting my phone. I've always been weary in doing so because it could possibly void my warranty. This procedure though seems to be fairly easy. What would be the easiest way to unroot the phone if I need to take it in for service? Also the only micro sd card I have is the stock 2gb one. If I clean out the card and format it, would this be fine to use for rooting the phone or do I have to purchase a bigger card to do so?

Thanks for any replies, I'm new to all this and love the amount of information this site provides.

Thank you. Done, and did not brick *whew*
2 notes for you, sir; perhaps one is useful.

Under "Backing up the phone": "Move to Backup and Recovery, then select. This will show the Backup and Recovery menu."- my option was called "Backup and Restore", the menu the same. Could scare some folks who probably shouldn't be rooting, but I felt it was a difference worth noting in such a precise and concise set of instructions.

Also, (and this one is probably less relevant to your purposes) I purchased a new 8GB card after noting that less than 2GB was not recommended, and formatted it to FAT32 before using it to replace the stock sdcard. I copied all the files from my stock card to the new one (there was no Update.zip in the root directory) but the reflash stalled twice with the new card in place. I then formatted the stock card to FAT32, wiping all the info there, and placed it back into the phone, replacing the newly purchased 8GB one. This allowed the reflash to complete, and now I'm S-OFF, and all thanks to you.

Sorry, one more.

Still under your backup instructions, #5 "When the backup completes (several minutes), press the power button to return to the main ClockWorkMod menu"-
when my backup completed, I was taken instantly to the ClockWorkMod menu without having to press anything- and of course you say "press the power button" when you've already correctly stated that the optical sensor is the functional option for navigation. Pressing the sensor at that time selected the already highlighted "reboot system now" from the CWM menu.

I certainly hope that, as I would, you appreciate these admittedly picayune notes. Please take them in the spirit intended: I took the time to send these notes as evidence of my sincere appreciation that you took the time to hold my hand step by step as I rooted for the very first time. Thank you.

I also saw both the differences that baciv describes (the difference in the backup option name, and not needing to press the power button) when I rooted my DInc. As he says, the deviations from the instructions are minor, but might possibly discombobulate someone who lacked confidence. If you just forge onward it works fine. :D

OK I have rooted my phone (I guess). I see superuser and the S-off when booted into HBOOT. Anyway, my problem now is that I can't seem to get my wireless tether to work. It loads up and seems to work but doesn't connect my computer/ Ipod/etc to the net. Any ideas? I am using the wireless tether for root users available for free on the market. I used to use it with my previous unrevoked root for 2.1. Is it disabled now due to Froyo?

Most likely you just need a different version of wireless tether. I'm running a 2.2 ROM and use it all the time. I think the latest version is pre9.

Sorry this may have been asked before but ,does installing unrevoked3 void warranty and if so can it be uninstalled?

Yes, and probably yes although I believe others have claimed to have taken the phone in for warranty service after rooting and Vzw fixed it anyway.
