I'm not of the answer or solution to your issue...a quick Google search showed some solutions, but most of there were not really for a new Android user since they seemed to involve rooting your phone.
I think I would try contacting someone at Skype support (there should be contact information listed somewhere on the app description in the Market) and see what they suggest.
