Skype with video?

Hi, I see I can now get Netflix, which is great but when or where can I get skype with video chat?! This was one of the main reasons for getting this phone was for the front facing camera and Skype video chat. Can anyone help? I am hating my phone because of not having this feature which was advertised. Thanks in advance. Oh, and I am not technical enough to root, but if that would fix this, I may be up for it.

Funny, cuz this is the response I got from the VZ rep today!! I am NOT impressed! They clearly do no know what they are doing!

Good Evening Mrs. Thank you for replying through our website. My name is Melodee, I understand that you would like information regarding using Skype Video Calling on your Thunderbolt. I am happy to hear that you are now able to use Netflix! I can definitely provide you with information on the Skype Video Calling today.

I would first like to take a moment and thank you for your continued loyalty to Verizon Wireless. You have been a valued customer since 2005 and your business is appreciated.

While Skype Mobile is also a third-party application that we do not support, I was able to find the following information about video calling using Skype Mobile on your HTC Thunderbolt:

To Make a Skype Video Call:
From the applications page, select Skype mobile.
If prompted, enter the Skype name and password then select Sign in.
From the Contacts tab, select the contact.
To place a video call to the contact, select Video.

To Receive a Skype Video Call:
Select Video when the Skype call comes in.

You must also ensure that your front-facing camera is on when using Skype video calling by:

Select Video (upper-left corner).
If needed, select the screen to see the video icon.
Select the option.
Video off

Looks like a generic "how-to" copy/paste from a "how to use Skype video" , without getting device specific. Obviously it doesn't work on the TB, and they didn't feel like taking the time to actually look up that it doesn't. They just assumed you just wanted to know how to use the video, and never thought to realize that it doesn't actually WORK on the phone. Chalk it up to a poor rep, and move on, i guess...

I guess I thought videoconferencing was one of the features of the TB.
It was supposed to be, but mention of Skype video chat was pulled from the premarketing materials prior to launch. There was a leaked version that worked on the stock ROM prior to MR2. It worked fine for some, was buggy for others, then MS bought Skype and Verizon released a video of their own app/feature in development ...

The following is their response, but it did not work for me. I can downloand the file onto my phone, but it will not install. At least is was a nice email!

Good Evening Mrs.,

Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless through our website. My name is Zeitori, and I am happy to assist you regarding your inquiry concerning downloading and installing SKype with video chat on your HTC ThunderBolt . I regret to learn that this has been a problem, however I will work to find options and alternatives for this Skype issue.

Mrs., Skpye with video chat is available for Android phones with the Android 2.3 Gingerbread. At this time your wireless phone only has 2.2 Froyo, so it is not compatible. I was able to find a version that works as a work around. I can not grantee that this will work but it appears to work correctly for other HTC ThunderBolt ADR6400 owners but it appears to be hit or miss. if this doesn't work you will have to wait until the 2.3 Gingerbread is released for your wireless phone, at this time I do not have an ETA of when this will become available. If the link below doesn't work please do a Google search for the file name TBolt_GB_Skype.apk.

As a reflection of my commitment to resolving your issue, I did attempt to contact you on the wireless number ending in today. Unfortunately I was not able to reach you, so I did leave a voicemail.

If you continue to experience difficulties concerning this issue, please contact me directly for further assistance. You can reach me at 803-231-1785. My normal business hours are 2:30 pm - 11 pm M-F. This call will go directly to my voicemail, please leave me your name, mobile number and the best time that you may be reached.

If outside my hours in the office, please contact our Technical Support Department at 800-922-0204 option 3 from a landline phone to speak with a technical support representative who will walk you through step-by-step instructions to troubleshoot the issue. Please have your wireless phone fully charged and available when you call. The department is available between 6 AM

Call & email him back and tell him that that version of Skype video chat worked with the ThunderBolt prior to the MR2 update but not afterward. Ask him if/why Verizon purposefully designed the MR2 update so that it would stop Skype from working on the ThunderBolt. If he doesn't know, ask him to escalate your issue to someone who can answer your question. Also, ask him to stop spreading ignorance and misinformation.

Any fix for this? I am also in need of using the front camera. I read that the program oovoo works with the front camera.

If what's in the Market is correct, it should work with the T-Bolt now that it has GB. (seems back camera only was a Froyo issue)...

If I knew anyone on Skype I'd test it out, but I never loaded it since it wasn't working correctly with the T-bolt. I'd like to know too because the spouse travels and it would be nice to see her when we chat.
