Help Slow screen start up after taking

This is my problem and wanted to know if anyone has a fix for it. When I phone a number and get their stupid automated menus and I have to make selections, and I take the phone away from my ear the screen is black and it takes couple of seconds for it come back. By this point the automated menu has said other stuff and even hung up on me cause I didn't make my selection fast enough. How do I make the screen response faster?

This has even happened when I have it on speaker phone and the screen goes black and when the other party answers it takes away to turn back on for me to take them off speaker phone. I have try all kinds of settings but nothing is working.

I don't know if there is a way to adjust the timing of the timeout on the proximity sensor, but pressing the lock button should wake the phone up instantly.
