Help Slowness using Handcent

Been using my Moment just over a year now. No real glaring issues for me. The one thing I do seem to be noticing however is that over time with all the Handcent upgrades it seems my phone acts more sluggish when using Handcent. Sometimes when I'm in a txt exchange with a few people at a time changing screens seems to take it's time. Seems the processor is having a hard time keeping up with the Handcent demands.

Anyone else notice this or is it just my imagination?

Yes, I use Handcent v 3.4.3 and it is sluggish. Most recently, a few minutes ago I sent a msg using Handcent and left it open waiting for a reply. I received a phone call and could not answer it. The sliders appeared but when I tried to take the call nothing happened. The screen was completely unresponsive and by the time the slider reacted, the call was missed! uuughhhh! I am hesitating to update to version 3.5 after reading about sluggishness in user-comments.

I was experiencing the exact same thing with Handcent slowing down my phone and force closing all the time. On a whim I decided to completely uninstall the app and try something else. I downloaded GO SMS from the market due to the reviews saying it was a lot quicker and more streamlined than either Handcent or Chomp. GO was alright, but I missed a lot of the extra features Handcent had (which I guess is why Handcent is over 5mb and GO is only a little over 2mb) so I uninstalled it and reinstalled the latest version of Handcent from the market. It has now been almost a week and Handcent is still running as quickly as it ever has. My phone hasn't acted sluggish at all since reinstalling it and no more force closing!

I never noticed Handcent affecting other phone functions when I had my Moment, but it could be laggy to start. Chomp seemed a bit less laggy and offered an almost identical feature set. YMMV

I also have noticed that it's very laggy but reading at the comments in the market not only the moment .. I had a backup V3.3.2 and that one is the one I'm running

It's been slow and laggy for me for a few months now. I'm just use to waiting about 10sec to send or read a txt message.

Everything but picture mail works great with handcent. The last update may a big difference in speed.

It's funny you mention picture mail. Prior to the last update I would always use my stock messaging app to send picture mail because it would rarely go through using Handcent for some reason. I've used Handcent to send picture mail since updating it and it's worked great. I don't know what the fixed in the update but it's much better now. On a side note, I got the latest version of Swype around the same time and it's much better too.

Yep funny! Cause I haven't had any trouble sending or receiving MMS with handcent.

Yeah I even did the data restore using the MSL and mms messages stopped about a week later. I still use the stock app to send picture messages though so not a huge deal for me. I got swype as soon as the voice button version came out and loved it.

I actually don't send pictures using sprint's msg system cause of the damn way they use to deliver them re-sized tiny low resolution pics ... blah!
But I get a lot of funny jokes (the usual fwds) so that's how I can say I use handcent and it works.
