Help smart dialer

I have an evo, and I got an optimus s for my mom. She loves it,but I am bummed that it does not seem to have the "smart dial" feature. You know....where from the phone pad you start dialing "mom" and it finds her in the phone book. That is so much easier than scrolling through the contacts. I thought it was an auto feature in our OS.....is is just a feature of HTC and not LG? Or do I just need to turn it on somewhere? Thanks for your help.

That's a feature of HTC's sense dialer (T9 dialing). Check out dialer one in the app market it's free and it offers T9 dialing. I'm using it on my optimus and I used it on the Droid X I had before, works great.

Actually if you going into the dialer and start to dial the name it will give you names of contacts that match your button presses.

As well you can hit the mag glass button and "search" for the name, bring it up that way as well.

Ok......so from the home screen.....I tap the little phone icon at the bottom of the screen.....I type "2 5 5" as in a l l....for allyson......and the screen only shows me 255.....it never gives me a list of the people I might be trying to reach.

Does yours give you the list that gets shorter as you enter more, or that you can tap who you want to call? Are you using the same icon that I am to start the phone pad.
Thanks for your help.

It doesn't work that way on an Optimus S.

Ahhh.. I have a Optimus M.

I don't have another android phone to compare it to but "looks" stock.

Yea I type "3" and it will give me a list of like 5 people with the names starting with E.

Sorry. Seems that the Optimus S, M and T all have good and bad..not consistent across the board.

this. "Dialer One" is what i use on the evo actually because i hate the sense dialer and contact list.

Yeah, I hope they add that feature to the stock android dialer one of these days. I got used to it on my HTC WM phones and I have a really hard time living without it.

The only downside to dialing this way is that I have NO IDEA what anyone's real phone number is anymore.

Hi all, I too am interested in the smart dial feature and have an Optimus S.

I was wondering if anyone has tried installing the phone.apk from an Optimus M, onto their Optimus S.

If someone is willing to upload the .apk, I am willing to "try it out". :D

If you reply to this, and want to do this, please tell me the best/easiest way to get the .apk from you as I'm still kinda new to the forums.

I would like to do this since these forums have really been a great help/resource to me and I desire to give something back.

Thank you all for your time.

Why not just use the built-in voice dialer? Push the button on the side of the phone and say, "Call Jane Doe at home", or "Call John Smith mobile."

Or if your contacts are in Gmail, use Google Voice Search in the same way.

Or why not just open the "Contacts" folder and either surf to it using the tab and/or put frequently used numbers in your favorites for easy access?
