Smart dock. HDMI. and MHL

Has anyone found and OEM or 3rd party smart dock that for sure works with the Note 3. How well does the charging work through the dock compared to the standard wall plug that comes with the Note 3.

I wanted to mirror my phone display on my tv, but realized that I had a microHDMI to HDMI cable from the Droid Bionic. I dont have a microUSB to HDMI. Anybody has success with any particular brand on their Note 3?

On the Samsung site I see the MHL adapter, but it claims to need power to work. I thought I read elsewhere that power is needed for the Note 2, but maybe not the Note 3.

Bottom line, looking for a solid, reasonably priced solution to mirror the Note 3 to a TV via HDMI.

Thanks in advance for the advice and suggestions.

The Samsung Smart Dock works with the Note 3 according to this.

The Note 3 has MHL2.0 which means it should be able to power the MHL connection on its own without the need for external power. To use your old MHL adapter, you need a 5 pin to 11 pin adapter.

Using a Note 2, it will not charge the phone when connected to the smart dock. The power drain is greater than what can be supplied. That is having MHL, keyboard, USB hub, wireless mouse and a few external HDD/USB sticks connected.

I don't have any MHL cable or HDMI cable. That is what I am looking to pickup. Will a microUSB to HDMI work, or for the screen mirroring to work, then MHL adapter should be used?

Did the note 2 need a 5 pin to 11 pin adapter? Why does note 3 need it?

You can pickup a regular MHL adapter, but it requires a 11 pin connector. The 11 pin connector has a different head compared to micro USB. The smart dock has the advantage of using USB OTG with MHL simultaneously.

Yes. The 11 pin mapping was introduced with the S3. Anything coming after this required the 11 pin adapter (S4, Note 2, Note 3).

The only difference is that the S4 and Note 3 have MHL 2.0 which means it's capable of using the MHL adapter without an external power source. Though it's still probably a good idea to still have it connected to an external power source to conserve battery power.

Can the note 3 mirror the display to a TV screen via HDMI strictly using a microusb to HDMI? Is if the MHL+adapter required

I honestly don't know the answer to that. I only have a Note 2 and use either the Smart Dock or MHL adapter. I have never used a microUSB to HDMI cable.

Though most microUSB to HDMI cables I see listed as compatible with phones do state being MHL compatible (so it must be something hardwired in the cable to do it). Something like this:

You just have to make sure that the microUSB is 11 pin and MHL compatible if looking strictly for a microUSB to HDMI cable.

I've just mirrored my Note 3 to a Samsung monitor with an MHL/HDMI input using a passive micro-usb to HDMI cable, but it didn't work at first so I had to buy a so-called adapter tip to put on the micro-usb end of the cable. These are made by both Samsung and 3rd party manufacturers. I paid the equivalent of abt 10 dollars for mine, it wasn't made by Samsung.

Bottom line is it should also work on a TV that has an MHL/HDMI input

Almost work. Hmm. Not clear enough for an goof like me. So the best/certain way to get this to work is what. Get the MHL adapter from Samsung. and get an usb/hdmi cable.. but somehow make sure it has 11 pins or support MHL?

you would think samsung would make this a little easier.

UPDATE: so the MHL 2.0 HDTV Smart Adapter. Perhaps this doesn't need th 5 pin to 11 pin adapter? I see that on the samsung site also. For smart adapter seems like you just use standard HMDI cable only if you use that adapters. right?

If you get this, all you need is a standard HDMI cable. Nothing else. The Note 3 has MHL 2.0 so you don't need to connect an external power source to it. It can power the connection on its own.

You don't need this if you get the MHL adapter above. This is for people (like me) who had the 5 pin MHL adapter. This basically allowed us to use our old MHL adapter without the need to buy another new accessory.

You can mirror the screen on anything that has an HDMI input. I use it on my monitor, hotel TVs and projector. The only real issue one might encounter is the scaling of the input device. Sometimes it doesn't scale properly.
