Help Smart Lock question

Can someone who is knowledgeable about Smart Lock please answer my question at:

TLDR: I want to require a PIN when my phone is nearby, but require a longer, encryption password when it is far away. Just wondering if it's possible.

Buy a phone with fingerprint unlock capability, you need neither PIN nor Password.

I highly doubt it, as the encryption feature requires maximum security and Smart Lock merely provides a way of overriding the lock screen depending on its own (presently limited) range of parameters.

You might be able to achieve what you want by using Tasker, but I suspect that the level of control you require could only be achieved (if at all) with root access.
