Help Smashed screen, access to contents

Hi folks -
so last night my wife managed to knock something out of the cupboard which landed on (you guessed it) her HTC Sensation, which was charging underneath.

The screen is spiderwebbed and pressing the power button (it was powered off at the time) makes the screen lighten a bit but there's no display - thus no way to enter her unlock pattern.

Now, she's priced a screen replacement, but before she sends it off we'd ideally like to get access to as much of the phone as possible to save whatever can be saved in case the repair place does a factory reset.

Now, given that we can't turn the phone on (can't even see the startup password/screenlock never mind enter them), we also can't get it attached via USB to the computer as a hard drive.

Is there *any* way we can get access to the phones internals?
Ideally, we'd like to get any pictures/videos/downloads which weren't saved to the SD card, a BIG bonus would be getting access to the SMS messages where's she's kept (as locked messages) friends addresses, birthdays etc.

I know that by default pictures/videos she's taken herself should be saved to the SD card, but she thinks there's ones missing that should be there so we have to assume they're in the phones internal storage.

Any ideas?
