Help SMS Apps?

Just curious why people prefer the 3rd party apps over the stock one? For me the stock ones have always worked just fine.

I like having a box pop up when I get a new text. It makes it easier to reply quickly, even when in another app. The stock sms doesn't do this, so I use Go sms pro. I also like the themes Go sms pro has.

I use handcent because I like being able to assign a different tone, background pic, led color, icon, and signature, for each contact.

The stock SMS app in ICS is much better in my opinion than previous versions of android...I just wish there was a way to turn off graphical Smileys.

Waaaaay more options with Handcent. IE - notifications, LED color, bubble settings, black background and more...

I had handcent on my old phone and loved it, but I hear that it doesn't jive so well with ICS. For those of you that have handcent on your GNex, how has it performed so far?

all ics stock is lacking for me is the preview/quick reply box that is common in most 3rd party sms apps. if it had that, i wouldnt bother using an app, but for now i guess its gosms for me

I have Handcent on my GNex. I used it for 2 years on my D1 and loved it. My first problem was trying to figure out how to make it the default messaging app. I tried disabling the stock messaging app, and after that, the handcent icon showed up in some places (trying to share a picture for example). However, when I tried to share a panorama with someone, it kept crashing. It went through with the stock app though.

I re-enabled the stock messenger, and the handcent icon stayed as default, but no problems since then. There's no option in the settings to clear defaults of the stock messenger, nor does handcent ask if you want it to be the new default.

Handcent has a setting to make it the default for sms, mms, or both.

It force closes when testing your notification and when downloading a mms.
I sent them an email as I'm sure others have, it probably won't take too long for them to fix it.

I'm having the same problems as pool shark. The other problem I'm having is when you start a new text, click the + to add contacts and they are sorted completely random. This happening to any one else?
