Help SMS dated to 1969

The other day I went to delete a couple of SMS threads in Handcent but when I did so it did not remove them from the list. It simply cleared them and moved them to the bottom of my handcent screen and dated them dec 31, 1969. I tried removing handcent today and deleting them from the stock message app and it did not work. Any thoughts? I did just up date to .5.9.902. No root.

Unix/Linux time is maintained as a count of seconds since January 1, 1970, 12:00am GMT. Android is based upon Linux, so it likely also uses the same underlying time values.

When a time is set to zero, that is considered to be January 1, 1970, 12am GMT, which would be December 31, 1969, 7pm US/Eastern or 4pm US/Pacific.

The time values on your messages have been set to zero. I don't know why they weren't fully deleted.

Yes the messages with the weird date are showing up both in Handcent and The stock messaging app. Deleting a thread in either does not solve the problem. I don't want to be in the 70's.

I have had similar problems with MMS messages but on my OG Droid and only after restoring them from MyBackup Pro.

When I needed to update to a new revision of the custom ROM on my OG Droid I would backup my SMS and MMS using MyBackup Pro, flash the new update, then restore messages.

My MMS would do something similar to what you describe, I would delete a message and it would still show up in the list, in both Handcent and stock apps. They could not be deleted, in fact, trying to get info about them would cause Handcent to FC every time and the stock app did nothing at all when I long pressed on the message. I eventually figured out every time I tried to delete the offending message it was actually deleting a different message.

I never found a complete solution, I just stopped restoring MMS messages.

I did notice that eventually, the offending messages disappear on their own, presumably when a thread reached the preset maximum number of messages and the system began deleting the oldest ones first.

Interesting. I will probably just end up doing a factory reset sometime this weekend. I have tried everything I know how to do to fix it. Thanks for the help guys.

I should note that I could delete an entire conversation and the problem would go away, I didn't want to do that though at the time.
