SMS forwarding to an international phone number

I live and teach abroad but I need to stay connected to my bank account in the US, to Amazon, etc. I need to be able to receive sms messages to get verification codes on my phone but my bank will not accept an international phone number. I have read of android apps that will forward sms messages to another phone number or to an email. Does anyone have any experience with one of these? I have an cell phone in the US with an active phone number.

maybe try google voice.....you can receive text messages from it.

Thanks! Google voice does not work outside of the US - Google's decision, not the other country. Also, the app needs to manage an international phone number - 2 digits for the country code and then 11 digits for the phone number

Perhaps you can setup your account to send the verification codes via email instead of SMS? I know some banks and services that require one time codes will do that. Or maybe the account can be setup to use something like Google Authenticator for secure login codes.
