Sms from call list?

Hi had my new HTC DESIRE,for 1 week now,very happy with performance and speed of the internet...

Although one problem i have searched high an low for is bugging me.
How can you send a SMS.TXT to somebody in your call list?
Surely you dont have to save all the numbers of people who call you just to sms them? freinds that are in my contacts are fine,i can sms easy but others it will only let me save the number???
I dont mean a "i will call you later" tx from the menu either...

If somebody you dont know rings you and then you are unable to answer the call so then i want to text/sms them instead??

Any help here guys?

I just got my 1st touchscreen phone last week- a used Droid I picked up on eBay. I'm learning the finer points as I go, but so far this gizmo has exceeded my every expectation!

Just wanted to thank everyone out there that has taken the time to post to this forum fo saving me from the frustration of knowing there's got to be an easier way and not knowing how to do it.
