Help SMS Messages Getting Hung Up

GeniusX

Lurker
I have an HTC One Max, and my SMS messages keep getting hung up. When trying to send, I'll get the little clock in the lower right corner of the text window which indicates it's being sent, but hasn't been delivered yet. The clock will remain there for up to 30-40 minutes sometimes, and all incoming texts must wait until the outgoing text finally sends. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any idea if it's because I move between networks and bluetooth throughout the day (not a lot, just going from home wifi to work wifi, with bluetooth in the car during the commute). It's annoying and means I can't have necessary instant SMS back-and-forth with work colleagues. Thanks!

I guess you're not rooted.,correct?

Are you on sprint?

Does this occur anywhere in your area or certain areas?

Are you on WiFi when this happens? If you turn off wifi and test do you still have the same issue?

What messenger are you using on your device? Stock or 3rd party?

Are you using Google hangouts? Google voice? Any other voip app?

Did you soft reset?

What carriers are you sending texts to? Does this happen no matter what carrier you send to?

What happens when people send you a text? Do you receive them on time? Are they delayed getting to you?

Can you access data (say can you stream youtube or access the Internet from your browser)?

Did this just start happening or has it been happening for a while?

Have you contacted your carrier to see if there are any temporary cell outages in your area?

Answering these questions will help more than you know...

I have had this issue sporadically, first with an HTC test phone then infrequently on my OneMax (on VZW). The devs said it may have been the sheer volume of text messages I kept. I used the HTC transfer tool and save all my texts for years. Had something in neighborhood of 10,000.

Always the stock HTC message app. It never prevented messages from coming in though, it also never stopped me from sending new messages. I could just forward the message that was stuck and delete the one with clock icon. I could also usually toggle airplane mode and force them to send.

For me, location did not matter, I NEVER use wifi, and always had a good 4G signal (internet was working).

If you tend to save a lot of messages then I suggest saving a sms backup, then clearing/deleting all your texts. If problem stops then you know what it was, if it doesn't stop you can restore those messages and continue to troubleshoot.

I finally got the m9 and didn't transfer texts this time around.

Are you on sprint? No, Verizon

Does this occur anywhere in your area or certain areas? Anywhere in my area

Are you on WiFi when this happens? If you turn off wifi and test do you still have the same issue? I am on WiFi when this happens, but also when I'm out of range of WiFi in a 4G

What messenger are you using on your device? Stock or 3rd party? Stock

Are you using Google hangouts? Google voice? Any other voip app? No to all of these

Did you soft reset? Yes, often, and that usually breaks the currently held-up SMS message, but it won't stop it from happening again shortly.

What carriers are you sending texts to? Does this happen no matter what carrier you send to? Verizon and Sprint are the two I know I'm sending to, and they are affected equally.

What happens when people send you a text? Do you receive them on time? Are they delayed getting to you? If I don't currently have a hung-up SMS, I get texts from others immediately. If I have do currently have a hung-up text, once that text finally sends, I will get any outstanding incoming texts all at once immediately thereafter.

Can you access data (say can you stream youtube or access the Internet from your browser)? Yes, data is no problem.

Did this just start happening or has it been happening for a while? It's been happening for at least 6 months.

Have you contacted your carrier to see if there are any temporary cell outages in your area? No, and the problem seems longer that temporary at this point.

I do tend to keep my SMS messages for a while, but have each thread capped at 500 (200 MMS). Maybe that's the problem. I will try that approach if nothing else fixes the issue. Good idea - thanks!

Yeah sounds like a local issue, could be memory allocation as the other poster above mentioned.

Definitely try those steps above, especially if it's gotten worse....

Let us know. This was driving me crazy for a while. I'd had a text get stuck and stay that way for 24 hours before I realized.

I just backed up my texts using SMS Backup & Restore. I have a total of 6,673 texts totaling 152.83 MB. Is that an outrageous amount? I have no context to put that in. I am going to delete a good portion of them and see if it makes a difference. I'll keep you posted.

That is a lot. Not near as many as I had, but the HTC Dev I spoke to during testing said the text message database may struggle with that much in there.
