Help SMS Notification Ringtone

Greetings All,

File under 'Really Stupid Question', but how do I set a song of choice for SMS notifications? It is intuitive with the ring but not so with using a song for SMS.

On another note and with respect to Cumberland Farm's 'SmartPay' app, this will not function properly on my phone. It hangs and / or initializes forever. Not so on my Wife's phone (also a 3S, both bought at the same time). Any thoughts?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Notification ringtone: Go to the notification settings, and tap on ringtone. All your ringtones should show up in a list. Pick one, and tap O.K., and you should be good to go. As a side note, try to separate the short ringtones into a group for notifications, as opposed to longer ringtones. Good luck.:p

Thanks, but I was wondering how to use an .MP3 for a ringtone as I do for calls, yet an option to point to other music does not seem to exist....

Switch ringtones & notification tones to m4a, and you're good to go.:p

You can put mp3 files in the Ringtone folder on your sdcard and they will show up for ringtones.

Also, in the stock music player you can choose a song and hold on it for a second and a menu will popup. "Set as" will be one of the choices, and you have 3 options, but not SMS. As far as SMS notifications, maybe if someone can tell us where they're stored, perhaps putting songs in there would do it?

If you are using a 3rd party music player maybe it provides that functionality?

There are 3 types of folders that store sound accordingly.
Alarms, Notifications and Ringtones.

Create folder call "Media". In that folder, create another folder, call "Audio", and in that folder, 3 sub-folders; Alarm, Notification, Ringtones. Then upload your files to these folders.

I use iTunes to open the file's INFO, and name them with _underscore, so they appear nicely, one after another, rather than being mixed with Samsung defaults.

You can create the MEDIA on internal or external card, the phone will find them both. Just from my experience, I used to lose my Whatsapp notifications whenever I restarted the phone. Seem the app loads faster than the phone can mount the external card, and it will always set them back to default or none.
Since I moved all my files to internal memory, I no longer experience that problem.

Also, storing them in MEDIA folder, should prevent them from appearing in your Music collection app.

Keep in mind, some 3rd party apps, will display all your sounds regardless where they are. Samsung however, in some cases, look into specific folders for specific sound types, so you won't find ringtone while trying to set up notification, and vice versa.

Thanks! However, I am not seeing that option under 'Sounds' or any other menu. Where should I be looking?

Again, thanks!

That's not an option in the menu, that's file format. An alternate to mp3 file.

M4A was generally intended as the successor to MP3. It's smaller in size and can supply higher quality audio.

Correct, I understand that. However, with respect to notifications for SMS (text messages) I have zero options to say "Use this audio file" and point it to where it is. The only options available to me are the factory installed (read: lame) tones.

As Grunt0300 said "Notification ringtone: Go to the notification settings, and tap on ringtone. All your ringtones should show up in a list. Pick one, and tap O.K., and you should be good to go. Again, only the factory installed tones are available so I was wondering if there was another menu to allow me to point to an audio file of choice rather than the provided tones.

With the ringtone such is not the case. I can use the tones provided or add an audio file, which I have done.

No, there is no a menu for file browsing, I think you misunderstood the reply. This feature might be available in some 3rd party apps, but for Samsung tones, as I said earlier, you need to place them in designated folders, then upon boot-up, the phone identifies them and list them among the default Samsung's tones. Did you place them in those respective folders?

Also, as I mentioned earlier, I underscore my files, so they appear on top of the list, one after another, rather then mix with the defaults.

And if you did place the files in their respective folders, then the only reason for them to not appear, is an invalid MP3 format, like some irregular Bit Depth or Sample Rate.
