Help SMS on Captivate

Hi Forum, new to the forums and new to Captivate. I have a new captivate but cannot send sms messages. It allows me to type them but when I press send they look like they go but are not received. Messaging app then says "saving draft" and shows 0/1. I tried loading Handcent SMS and it too allows me to send them but tells me there was an error in sending.

Can't receive SMS's either.

I can't find anything in the settings and I've searched the interwebs all day.

Sad and confused here.
